  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Land Use Support Indigenous Peoples' Land Management
Indigenous speaker and activist Winona LaDuke says that, "most indigenous ceremonies, if you look to their essence, are about the restoration of balance — they are a reaffirmation of our relationship to creation. That is our intent: to restore, and then to retain balance and honor our part in creation." Why is balance important to sustainability?

I think much of the conversation around sustainability can leave people feeling hopeless and sad. I' know people who feel that much pf the messaging is about the damage we have done and continue to do almost to the extent that it comes across that we don't belong on this planet too. It also stops people from even trying. We are part of this system and we can and absolutely need to do better. It's important to understand that everything is a give and take and we have taken a great deal so we have some serious giving to do. We should be striving to live in nature as a neighbor instead of on top of nature as a dominating force.

    Transport Conduct Virtual Meetings
How can you ensure that your virtual meetings honor your values and your company's culture?

    LaTriece Arthur's avatar
    LaTriece Arthur 4/23/2019 8:38 PM
Sustainability and cost saving are both valued by my company and meeting virtually helps us achieve both of those goals. Connecting with our colleagues across campuses is really important so I love that we have video conferencing available so we can still see one another which helps increase engagement.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Food Learn More about Silvopasture
Had you heard of the term "silvopasture" before now? After learning more about it, what do you think is the biggest advantage of silvopasture?

    LaTriece Arthur's avatar
    LaTriece Arthur 4/15/2019 9:06 PM
"Silvopasture" was a new term for me although I am familiar with other symbiotic agriculture relationships. I always loved the idea of having apple trees on my property and although I've never considered raising pigs it does create a great way fully utilize the crop yield.

    Transport Improve a Bus Stop
How can you advocate for transportation systems which minimize environmental impact while also meeting human needs?

    LaTriece Arthur's avatar
    LaTriece Arthur 4/15/2019 8:49 PM
I advocate for active transportation systems like walking, biking, public transit, and shared mobility but volunteering with non profits that engage in active transportation advocacy. I participate in various forms of community engagement including attending community meetings, contacting my representatives and talking to neighbors about improving local infrastructure.  Safe, affordable access to transit, walking and biking facilities should be a right for all people and it is super important to address equity disparities while looking at any future improvements and additions.

Food Learn the Truth About Expiration Dates
How does knowing the difference between use by, sell by, and best by dates empower you to make better decisions?

    LaTriece Arthur 4/10/2019 1:44 PM
Our lesson today really helped reduce my fear regarding label dates. I will use my senses to make decisions on if something has gone bad. I am excited that my local farmer's market is coming back soon which really seems to inspire us to get creative.

What do you want to prioritize over material 'stuff' in your own life?

    LaTriece Arthur's avatar
    LaTriece Arthur 4/09/2019 12:06 PM
I want to prioritize experiences and in particular experiences that remind me of or put me in the mindset of where I want to be in the future.

Buildings and Cities Express My Support
How could better walking infrastructure make your city both more enjoyable and more equitable?

Seattle is a city known for it's love the outdoors and therefore I expected a more pedestrian friendly environment. Having to request to safely cross a street instead it being an automatic consideration sends a message about what the city values. If push buttons are a must, shouldn't they respond to the pedestrian by changing the light sooner than normal. Making pedestrians wait longer encourages people to take risks crossing the road to get across the road faster. I would also like the city to improve upon the design of intersections on residential streets, and remember people walk there too and would like to feel safe doing so.

I like your insight that quicker light changes could reduce pedestrian risk.

Transport Research and Consider Switching to a Hybrid or Electric Vehicle
Reducing (or eliminating) exhaust emissions and improving public health are two benefits of green vehicles. What other motivators inspire you to consider switching to a more fuel-efficient vehicle?

We don't currently own a car but have had hybrids for rentals a couple of times. We are still new to Seattle and trying to determine if car ownership overall is the right move for us but based on our research when we decide to purchase hybrid will be a priority.

My apartment building provides the lighting for all hardwired fixtures in my apartment but I have asked if our lights can be switched to more energy efficient LED Bulbs. I also also talked to my partner about using more smart surge protectors so we can stop draining power when we aren't home.
