I think we need to aim for educating more people. If we educate more people, then there will be more people willing to be advocates for those who cannot let their voices be heard.

This challenge has been really great. I’m learning a lot  about myself and the environment. Even though the challenger is ending soon, I will still take what I have been doing and turn it into a daily routine.

Land Use Learn about Temperate Forests
As you learn more about the scope and seriousness of the environmental challenges we face, what impact does that have on your thinking and actions? What are the parts that feel overwhelming? What parts help you feel hopeful?

It is astonishing that most of the products and foods we consume on a daily basis are an effect of destroying important ecosystems. It makes me want to adjust a majority of my diet and use environment safe products.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Land Use Research Peatlands
Much of Indonesia's peatlands have been drained so they could be replaced with palm oil or pulp and paper plantations. How can you make choices that help to protect peatlands, even if you live far away from one?

To help protect peatlands you can write to elected officials to make them aware of the problem to begin with. Reading the articles I found it made me aware at how vital peatlands truly are.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Land Use Forest-Friendly Foods 1
How is your diet currently impacting deforestation? What can you do to decrease your negative impact and increase your positive impact?

After this challenge I was not sure how my diet specifically could be a factor in deforestation. Overall, I learned a lot that will help me make better decisions when it comes to consuming or even buying these foods. As of now I do not really consume many of the items listed in one of the articles provided, but I do enjoy a coffee every now and then. To decrease my impact I can read into where specific items come from, because I will be able to determine if it aids in the destruction of forests or not.

How difficult or easy was it to change your diet?

This was actually was easy for me, I did not have drawbacks from not being able to drink coffee
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Food Smaller Portions
Fun fact: Your brain and stomach register feelings of fullness after about 20 minutes of eating. While dishing food out, we tend to load our plates with more than we need. Using smaller plates helps to mitigate this. Aside from the environmental benefits, what other benefits might come out of eating smaller portions?

Watching your weight could also be a benefit of eating smaller portions

I learned that a majority of us take reproductive health for granted. We, in the US, have a lot of resources made available for family planning, but there are millions of women who do not have access to contraceptives. This means that the world population is rapidly growing and the resources continue to lessen.  It is important to educate ourselves and be advocates for those who wish for better reproductive care.

Food Learn the Truth About Expiration Dates
How does knowing the difference between use by, sell by, and best by dates empower you to make better decisions?

This challenge was very interesting, because I was able to learn the difference between the 3. In one of the articles I read, it stated that confusion between all of the labels has lead to billions of food waste every year. With this new information I have learned, I will be able to distinguish when the food I buy will definitely be able to be consumed instead of thrown away.
