REFLECTION QUESTIONTransport Research and Advocate for High-Speed RailWhat are the factors that influence your choice of transportation? These can include things like money, time, and convenience, as well as perceptions of danger or safety. What would need to change for you to regularly choose more climate-friendly options?
Susannah Bradley 4/24/2019 6:03 AMI think time is the biggest factor when it comes to transportation choices. I would love to travel to Europe on a boat, but the 3-4 weeks to get there means that kind of a trip is far less accessible than if I just take 7 hours on a plane. I guess that's why people used to "summer" in Europe. It would def help me take slower options if I had more vacation time and was less pressured to take a vacation quickly in a week or two. Not sure that's going to happen in the US any time soon! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Smaller PortionsFun fact: Your brain and stomach register feelings of fullness after about 20 minutes of eating. While dishing food out, we tend to load our plates with more than we need. Using smaller plates helps to mitigate this. Aside from the environmental benefits, what other benefits might come out of eating smaller portions?
Susannah Bradley 4/24/2019 6:01 AMThere's of course the obvious benefit of eating less when using smaller portions, but also if you eat less, you spend less to buy the food. That's a benefit I hadn't thought of until now! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONTransport Research and Consider Switching to a Hybrid or Electric VehicleReducing (or eliminating) exhaust emissions and improving public health are two benefits of green vehicles. What other motivators inspire you to consider switching to a more fuel-efficient vehicle?
Susannah Bradley 4/23/2019 12:08 PMI'm surprised by how affordable used EVs are! Some are less than $10k without many miles on them. I read an article about how EVs are less polluting than petrol cars even if they aren't solar powered because of the gains in efficiency electricity production nets over gasoline production! So interesting and yet another reason to make the switch. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONLand Use Buy BambooAre bamboo alternatives readily available in your community? If not, what are other sustainable alternatives?
Susannah Bradley 4/23/2019 12:07 PMI bought a bamboo toothbrush! The health food store has several. I really appreciate that I don't have to use plastic toothbrushes anymore. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONLand Use Forest-Friendly Foods 1How is your diet currently impacting deforestation? What can you do to decrease your negative impact and increase your positive impact?
Susannah Bradley 4/22/2019 8:41 AMDiet?! Forget diet - I'm actually pretty good with diet since I don't drink coffee and have very limited animal products. Chocolate is probably my biggest offender, but that's easy enough to look out for the Rainforest Alliance seal. What's really got me is my MAKEUP has palm oil in it. WTH. So sneaky too with all those different ingredient names!! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Keep Track of Wasted FoodAn average American throws out about 240 lbs of food per year. The average family of four spends $1,500 a year on food that they throw out. Where would you rather use this money?
Susannah Bradley 4/19/2019 7:53 AMIt's amazing how much our food waste has gone up with the baby - we let her try lots of food and she gets a lot in her mouth, but a lot ends up on the floor on in her hair. And we don't know how much she wants - it changes every day - so there's often some left over on her plate. We just eat it though! :)
