I convinced someone to start recycling bottles and cans at their workplace who was not doing so and they now feel good about their start up recycling center and are thinking about more initiatives. I feel good that I was able to get someone else to join the process by sharing my experience in conversation.

I was motivated to read many articles on recycling and energy managment by companies that I wouldn’t have normally read.  This increased my knowledge and I am now signed up for more information on these topics.

I enjoyed being part of this challenge and I will go on to do my own private challenges and continue to learn more about the environment.

Today I shopped at the Port Jeff farmers market for the Eco challenge! I bought locally grown  broccoli, cauliflower, purple, orange and white carrots, sea beans, tomatoes, cucumbers, snow peas, spring mix lettuce and fresh garlic.  I had a great conversation with the local grower that explained to me the hydroponics and hot house growing process that is used now and then the three local properties they use to grow their produce for summer and fall.  They also recycle their materials and containers.   I had a great healthy meatless meal with a lot of my fresh picks tonight and pre packaged my meals for tomorrow.  It was a very enjoyable experience.

Today I emailed the Town of Brookhaven to obtain a free recycling bin for paper recycling.  They emailed me back and I can pick that up on Monday.  These are new blue bins available to Brookhaven residents.

Today I read an article about a brewery company in Delray, Florida that developed a bio gradable  six pack ring for their beverages.  We all know plastic six pack rings are harmful to marine life.  They developed theirs using a wheat and barley product which becomes a snack for marine life!  The wheat and barley is compressed into a durable material that can survive transport and refrigeration.  It is compostable if properly disposed, yet if caught in a litter situation, it will be bio gradable.  While in an early phase, the company hopes other beverage distributors will come aboard and help reduce the manufacturing costs.  #saltwaterbrewery #E6PR

Today I joined my local Andrews Family Farm CSA for the summer!  I am excited to continue onward with this challenge and know I will already have continued challenges for myself in place.  This will help me continue with eating meatless/vegan meals and smaller portions.

I just read an article that in Poland cyclists visit the  Starry Night bike. This solar-powered blue bike lane glows in the dark.  It is completely self-sustaining and charged by the sun.
Phosphor, a synthetic material, is what is used and the sun charges it.  It will stay lit for over ten hours for night riding and then recharges during the light hours the next day.   It brings safety for bikers at night and yet is cost effective and sustainable.

just read an article about a grocery story in Thailand.  This store bundles  their individual produce in large folded  banana leaves, securing them with a thin bamboo reed tie wrap. They even price sticker right onto the banana leaf.   This kind of packaging eliminated all previous plastic packaging.

    Food Support Local Food Systems
Dependable fresh food, supporting local farmers and building resilient communities are just a few benefits of local food systems. Which of these (or other) advantages inspire you the most?

I will be shopping at the Port Jefferson Farmers Market for some of my produce. This will help me prepare more meatless meals and help me purchase more goods using less plastic wrappings and bags.
