  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Food Learn More about Regenerative Agriculture
Clean air, clean water and healthy food are three reasons to care about regenerative agriculture. What are some other reasons?

    Gillian Ederle 's avatar
    Gillian Ederle 4/24/2019 5:04 PM
Regenerative agriculture can put back nutrients into the soil and help provide arable soil for years to come. This will also help with feeding the growing population in the future.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Transport Research and Advocate for High-Speed Rail
What are the factors that influence your choice of transportation? These can include things like money, time, and convenience, as well as perceptions of danger or safety. What would need to change for you to regularly choose more climate-friendly options?

    Gillian Ederle 's avatar
    Gillian Ederle 4/24/2019 4:55 PM
I consider factors like home much the transportation costs and how much time it takes to get to the place I want to go to. I would change to a more climate-friendly option if it was close by and could do the same things that ungreen ways of transportation could do.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Materials Research Cement Alternatives
Concrete is a good example of a material that most of us encounter every day, but may its carbon footprint is not obvious. What other everyday materials might have a large carbon footprint? How can you find out more?

    Gillian Ederle 's avatar
    Gillian Ederle 4/23/2019 5:47 PM
Cheese has a large carbon footprint because it comes from cows but it is not as obvious. Cell phones also have large carbon footprints. Food is a big creator of emissions because of the transportation of the foods and the amount of forest clearing to make room for cattle or crops.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION

What did you find out? What is the most interesting fact you learned?

    Gillian Ederle 's avatar
    Gillian Ederle 4/23/2019 5:37 PM
I learned that one of the solutions to reducing carbon emissions from food consumption  includes a plant based diet and sourcing food from local venders. The most interesting fact I learned was that land clearing for agriculture is responsible for 1/8 of emissions.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Food Reduce Animal Products
In your opinion, what contributes to people in North America eating more meat than any other countries? What does this say about North American values and ways of living?

    Gillian Ederle 's avatar
    Gillian Ederle 4/23/2019 4:49 PM
I think North Americans eat more meat because they have better access to it and they view protein as a more healthier and better option than carbohydrates. North Americans are clearly worried about their diet and eating protein instead of carbohydrates that are viewed as less healthy.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Transport Research and Consider Switching to a Hybrid or Electric Vehicle
Reducing (or eliminating) exhaust emissions and improving public health are two benefits of green vehicles. What other motivators inspire you to consider switching to a more fuel-efficient vehicle?

    Gillian Ederle 's avatar
    Gillian Ederle 4/21/2019 9:07 AM
Hybrid cars have better gas milage than normal cars which means that they produce  less toxic materials into the environment. This also can improve human health because they are not breathing in hazardous gas.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Women and Girls Learn about the Need for Family Planning
What did you learn about the need for family planning? Share some of the learning with your friends!

Family planning can prevent the amount of unintended pregnancies world wide which can increase the amount of educated women and help lower the chance of overpopulating.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Food Learn the Truth About Expiration Dates
How does knowing the difference between use by, sell by, and best by dates empower you to make better decisions?

    Gillian Ederle 's avatar
    Gillian Ederle 4/21/2019 8:46 AM
Knowing the difference between use by, sell by, and best by will help me waste less food because now I understand that food can be used even past the use by date as long as it looks and smells ok.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Land Use Research Peatlands
Much of Indonesia's peatlands have been drained so they could be replaced with palm oil or pulp and paper plantations. How can you make choices that help to protect peatlands, even if you live far away from one?

    Gillian Ederle 's avatar
    Gillian Ederle 4/21/2019 8:40 AM
I can try to cut down on the food that I eat that contains palm oil and use alternatives to paper in order to prevent more drainage of peatlands.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Land Use Forest-Friendly Foods 1
How is your diet currently impacting deforestation? What can you do to decrease your negative impact and increase your positive impact?

    Gillian Ederle 's avatar
    Gillian Ederle 4/14/2019 7:38 AM
Any food in my diet that contains palm oil, cocoa, coffee or even meat leads to deforestation. Trees need to be cut down in order to make room for the crops that produce to these foods. I can eat less food containing these ingredients and look for products with seals on them like the Rainforest Alliance green frog.
