It was fitting that my final ecochallenge walk was along the beach in sunshine, listening to the sea lions barking. I've greatly enjoyed doing all the challenges I took on, and fully intend to keep walking at least 30 min everyday, no matter what the weather or how many other commitments I have. Kudos to this site for inspiring so many to take action. ♥

Oh how wonderful.  I used to walk along New Westminster and hear the sea lions bark and it was so amazing.  How I miss the west coast and it's beauty!

Walking around town is so beautiful now that the tulips and all the other spring flowers are out. It's lovely to walk the streets where I picked up litter and see them looking so nice. :)

Today I went down to the beach to take part in the Earth Day Festivities there, and afterwards walked along the Beach Trail with my daughter, her boyfriend, and their 4 month old Dalmatian puppy.

Have you heard about Tom Crowther, the climate change ecologist who has concluded that planting 1.2 trillian trees would reverse climate change? https://www.cnn.com/2019/04/17/world/trillion-trees-climate-change-intl-scn/index.html
There's a group dedicated to making this happen called Plant for the Planet. https://www.plant-for-the-planet.org/en/about-us

Wow that is great.   We are going to 2 local tree planting events in May, so feels good that we are contributing.   But I will have to check out your link.

Today I walked a brand new trail through the Myrtle Creek Wetlands, a newly protected area on the edge of town, just 10 min from my house. It was lovely to see and hear all the birds, and very informative to read the signs explaining the importance of wetland and the many species that need this fragile ecosystem.

I do car-sharing with my daughter-in-law. We have an old Toyota Echo and she has it 4 days a week and I have it 3. We divide up the cost of insurance, servicing, and repairs 4/7 to 3/7 and we keep track of our kilometres driven to divide up the cost of each fill-up. When I need to go somewhere on one of her car days, I walk, bike, take the bus, or carpool. We've done this for almost 7 years now, and it's worked very well. Our next car will be electric!

A beautiful walk today north of town. I took a couple of couchsurfers I was hosting up to the Sunshine Coast Trail and hiked part of the way with them.

Andy, are you aware of the Ontario part of The Great Trail? I'm not sure where in southern Ontario you are, but check out if it comes close to you.

Terry you’re so lucky to have access to such a beautiful trail system. That’s something we’re certainly lacking in southern Ontario. :(

The local paper here is running articles about recycling, composting, etc. Today there was an article about the plastic stickers on fruit and how they contribute to microplastics entering the environment. It seems that organic produce is one of the worst offenders,  in an effort to clearly mark each banana in a bunch as organic. An interesting alternative is called "natural branding." It is  laser etching into the skins of the fruit and vegetables. In the meantime, the article recommended that you remove all the stickers as soon as you get the produce home, to prevent then going inadvertently into the compost, or shop at farmers' markets, where produce won't have such stickers.

Rain, shine, or in between: it's wonderful to walk every day. I think it would be nice to keep up this commitment to fresh air and exercise permanently, but I'm not at all sure I'll keep walking daily after the end of this ecochallenge. It seems like it will be too easy to let other things crowd it out.
