Women and Girls Support Women-Owned Businesses
Globally, women typically invest a higher proportion of their earnings in their families and communities than men. How can you better support communities by supporting women? Can you share any past experiences that may help others take action?

In the community, we can support female coworkers and push back against gender bias. We can challenge the social norms and make it a comfortable environment for women to work the best they can and achieve the goals they wish to accomplish. Women are a vital part of the community as much as men are and they must be supported so that they can reach their full potential.

Family planning is an important part of gender equality and reducing poverty globally. This includes the use of safe family planning methods and access to information. People should have a reliable access to contraceptives and better national health systems.

While food shopping today, I avoided products such as candy bars and cereals containing palm oils which contribute to harmful deforestation of our forests.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Land Use Forest-Friendly Foods 1
How is your diet currently impacting deforestation? What can you do to decrease your negative impact and increase your positive impact?

    Natalie Guirales 4/24/2019 5:25 PM
Most soil deforestation is driven by beef, soy, palm oil, and wood products. Forests are important in regulating amount of carbon in the atmosphere and eliminating these forests prevents the storage of carbon. To help decrease my negative impact on deforestation, I will decrease my intake of palm oil and meat products such as Cheez-it and ice cream.

    Transport Use Muscle Power
How do your transportation choices affect your engagement in your community? Does your experience or enjoyment differ while walking, riding transit, biking or driving?

    Natalie Guirales 4/24/2019 5:14 PM
Each method of transportation provides a different experience. Driving isolates me from the outside world in the way that biking and walking does not. With biking and walking I am able to better enjoy the nature around me and take in the fresh air. I am more engaged when going on a bike ride or walk.

What does your vision of a sustainable community look like? What would need to be changed in order for such vision to become reality?

    Natalie Guirales's avatar
    Natalie Guirales 4/24/2019 5:12 PM
A sustainable community looks like one in which power comes from renewable resources, organic waste and recyclable materials are used in composting, and gardening is organic.

    Materials Go Paperless
What do you want to prioritize over material 'stuff' in your own life?

    Natalie Guirales's avatar
    Natalie Guirales 4/01/2019 5:56 PM
Rather than focusing on the material things in my life I would like to place a greater emphasis on improving my relationship with others, gaining more knowledge, and doing more service for others. These actions provide a much greater fulfillment than any material good can provide.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Food Smaller Portions
Fun fact: Your brain and stomach register feelings of fullness after about 20 minutes of eating. While dishing food out, we tend to load our plates with more than we need. Using smaller plates helps to mitigate this. Aside from the environmental benefits, what other benefits might come out of eating smaller portions?

Other benefits of eating small portions are keeping a healthy body weight by teaching your body to become satisfied with less food. Small and more frequent meals rather than large fewer meals help avoid the cycle of high and low blood sugar that results from eating too much at once and causing insulin levels to spike.
