    Food Learn More about Silvopasture
Had you heard of the term "silvopasture" before now? After learning more about it, what do you think is the biggest advantage of silvopasture?

I didn't know much about  silvopasture until know.  I think it would be a great advantage to farmers in the unpredictable future.

For anyone trying to reduce food waste, here is a hack that I learned from my aunt.  Instead of composting or throwing away vegetable scraps (carrot peel, onion ends, etc.) put them in a bag and store in the freezer until you're ready to make a soup stock.  I also like putting broccoli stems in smoothies.

I also cook as much of my broccoli stems as I can... when you get further down on the stem, you can cut off the tough, fibrous outside of the stem and slice up the rest into tender, sweet medallions :)

Great idea for the broccoli stems in smoothies! Maybe that's what I can do with my kale stems.

I don't have a specific recipe for vegetable stock, it always changes depending on what veggie scraps we have in the fridge or freezer.  I don't think you can go wrong really.  Once you strain the stock, your scraps can go in the compost.

Helpful...would love to get a recipe for a good vegetable stock, and what about peels from fruit? Of course, I’m curious about the discussion about this since our backyard ‘farm’ requires lots of compost which we’re always wanting to make!

I have selected 5 Food challenges because this category inspires me .  By choosing to purchase local, organic and zero waste packaging (even though it is often more expensive) I have a vote, I have a voice.  I have been doing this for many years now, but I was wondering if there was more I could do to make a difference.  I will work hard to not only cook meals with zero food waste, but to add to the challenge I will try to significantly reduce my packaging waste too.

That's awesome Allie! I'm trying to do several of those things as well (buy local, reduce food waste, and reduce packaging).

For reducing packaging, I've become a big fan of the Bulk Barn. You can bring your own containers or reusable bags with you, and fill them up directly. I'll bring little cloth bags with me to use the bulk section at regular grocery stores too, and it's helped cut out a lot of packaging. I can't help but think of folks with severe allergies though, who can't shop bulk... cutting back on packaging would be really hard!
