Captains Carrie and Aimee, special thanks to you for organizing this Eco challenge, the whole family has really enjoyed it.  It is a lot to think about for improving our environmental impact.

Yesterday we went on a walk in a park while waiting for our son's swimming competition.  We saw a lot of birds, including a big one in attached photo.

A Great Blue Heron. We also saw a lovely little flock of Golden Crowned Kinglits flitting around in the trees, very active little birds. It was beautiful.

I went to Starbucks today to meet with a friend.  This time I remembered to ask for using a mug before they filled up the coffee cup.  I don't buy coffee much so it has been hard for me to remember to bring my own refillable cup.

I went to the recycling depot at Thornhill Community Center dropped off 2 big bags of Styrofoam today and saw some people doing the same there, felt encouraging. I  was also surprised that there is a book exchange in the recycling depot-people drop off books that they don't want and pick up books they like, what a great idea!

Interesting about the book exchange!   We usually drop off books we no longer read to the library, but this is also a great idea!

I will try to do more repair - I am taking my wallet and a pair of boots with broken zippers to the repair shop so that I can keep using them.  We are also trying to make a trip to the recycling depot this week to drop off Styrofoam we saved.

I have a whole bag saved up for you!  :-)   Thank you for taking it off our hands.   If you want, we can do the next trip!

I learned something about recycling today.  Simon, this could have added to your debate regarding recycling- it reduce emissions therefore fighting climate change. "The household and industrial recycling solutions were modeled together and include metals, plastic, glass, and other materials, such as rubber, textiles, and e-waste. Paper products and organic wastes are treated in separate waste management solutions. Emissions reductions stem from avoiding emissions associated with landfilling and from substituting recycled materials for virgin feedstock. With about 50 percent of recycled materials coming from households, if the average worldwide recycling rate increases to 65 percent of total recyclable waste, household recycling could avoid 2.8 gigatons of carbon dioxide emissions by 2050. "

I'm sorry, at the end of my other reply, I said recycling materials uses more than 60% more energy than getting new materials, but it is actually supposed to be the other way around! Oops!

I did use it as a counterargument! My opponent said that recycling does have its harms to the environment, and then I asked the question: What would happen if we didn't recycle? That basically won me the debate because if we were to stop recycling because it has a few harms, even bigger harms would pop up because of the lack of recycling. Also, I found out that recycling materials uses more than 60% more energy than getting new materials, something like that.
