How is your diet currently impacting deforestation? What can you do to decrease your negative impact and increase your positive impact?

My consumption of meat and eggs are potentially indirectly impacting deforestation because of soy beans causing deforestation and being grown to feed livestock. My consumption of unsustainably sourced chocolate also has impacts on deforestation too. And anytime Im eating processed food, I might be eating palm oil, without even  realizing it since the product is often disguised under other names. I can decrease my impact by choosing to eat less meat and eggs. And when I do choose to eat animal products, opt for local, grass fed feed and ask my local co-op if the eggs are from farms where they don't feed chickens soy. I'll also consciously look for seals from FSC and Rainforest Alliance on packaging to know Im supporting companies doing the right thing when it comes to eliminating deforestation in their supply chain.

In what other ways could you help girls overcome health barriers to being able to attend school?

Donate to a mass school-based deworming program like https://www.povertyactionlab.org/evaluation/long-run-and-intergenerational-impacts-child-health-gains-deworming-kenya.

    or

Donate gently used, quality tennis shoes through organization like https://soles4souls.org/get-involved/give-shoes/ to help them with the long distance they have to travel or bikes to make travel easier too.

What concerns you the most about how we are affecting the planet? Consider both local and global actions.

The time sensitivity of it all and the need for us to take action today. I also wish it wasn't such a political issue and could become a universal effort so we can really create change both on the local and global levels.

What single-use items (e.g. straws, coffee cups, vegetable bags, plastic bags) do you regularly use? What could be substituted instead?

    Danielle Aba-Onu 4/01/2019 2:34 PM
Vegetable bags and plastic bags are probably the items I have used most frequently in the past. I recently purchased a cloth amazon bag for purchasing produce at the grocery store and beeswax wraps to replace the use of plastic bags for sandwiches, snacks and covering bowls in the fridge. I'm excited to incorporate these into everyday life.

What have you noticed on your daily walks? What have you enjoyed? What infrastructure changes could make your walks more enjoyable or possible?

On my walk in the neighborhood around our office today, I was specifically drawn to new metro line signs on the sidewalks helping to indicate the entrance point for pedestrians to access the above ground metro line located in the middle of the busy street. It also indicated which direction to take to take towards different parts of the city. I image that is especially nice for visitors or those new to using public transit.

Wayfinding is such an important part of our infrastructure making it possible to get from point A to point B efficiently and safely. It's especially important when using public transportation. And something I think I often take for granted unless in an unfamiliar place.

In your opinion, what contributes to people in North America eating more meat than any other countries? What does this say about North American values and ways of living?

If I was to generalize, I think we like to eat filling meals in America and fast food meals too. Meat is popular ingredient in fast food and on most families plate because it is filling and feels like a complete meal.

It's also cheap because of government subsidies and long-standing institutions in the US. If a burger is cheaper than a grain bowl, it's always going to win in the US. There needs to be a shift in funding priorities to help encourage positive eating habits.

    Food Composting
Producing food that goes uneaten squanders many resources—seeds, water, energy, land, fertilizer, hours of labor, financial capital. Which of these kinds of waste most motivates you to change your behavior regarding food waste? Why?

    Danielle Aba-Onu's avatar
    Danielle Aba-Onu 2/22/2019 2:18 PM
Water waste is a huge motivator to change behaviors regarding food waste. Stats about water shortages in the coming decades is scary and overwhelming. It's an topic I am motivated to learn more about and take action on.
