"Climate change has become a massive threat and has reached a level of global emergency. There is no Planet B and now is the time for every individual to take action and contribute. Every action, big or small, combined will help reduce carbon emissions and make a significant difference in the environment. "

REFLECTION QUESTIONMaterials Share Bioplastic Disposal TipsWhat concerns you the most about how we are affecting the planet? Consider both local and global actions.
ProximaCc ProximaCc 4/23/2019 4:52 PMThe rise in CO2 emissions and deforestation concern me the most because the rise in CO2 leads to floods, droughts, heat waves, more extreme weather and pure devastation. This leads to the rise of refugees as it destroys crops and kills livestock. This forces people into poverty. If the situation gets very extreme, we can be putting billions of people and other animals at risk. Deforestation also concerns me because it knocks out one of the main counteracters to global warming, endangering lots of wildlife. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONMaterials Research Cement AlternativesConcrete is a good example of a material that most of us encounter every day, but may its carbon footprint is not obvious. What other everyday materials might have a large carbon footprint? How can you find out more?
ProximaCc ProximaCc 4/22/2019 2:53 PMWooden furniture or any kind of wooden product has a carbon footprint because it contributes to deforestation. Refrigerators have a carbon footprint too because refrigerants are made of hydroflourocarbons (HFCs). Unlike chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs), they don’t destroy the ozone layer. However, they can be 1,000 - 9,000 stronger than CO2. You can find this information by looking at the Drawdown site or by simply doing an internet search. -
ProximaCc ProximaCc 4/22/2019 7:48 AMWith Spring Break ending and only three days left before the end of the EcoChallenge, I challenge everyone to do at least 1 one-time challenge. It can range from watching videos about Silvopasture and Methane Digesters, mulching trees in your backyard, getting a group of people to test drive electric bikes, to replacing incandescent lightbulbs with LED ones! Celebrate Earth Day by doing one of these EcoChallenges! -
ProximaCc ProximaCc 4/21/2019 3:35 PMAccording to the EPA, the top 5 biggest green power companies are Microsoft, Intel, Google, Wells Fargo and Apple. The biggest green power universities are Stanford, Georgetown, University of Maryland, University of Pennsylvania, Knoxville and University at Buffalo. REFLECTION QUESTIONMaterials Launch a Recycling ProgramHow can you take your commitment to sustainable living beyond yourself? How can you, personally, work toward broader change?
ProximaCc ProximaCc 4/21/2019 1:50 PMI can encourage other people to start recycling and composting as part of their daily life. I can also share information with other people and participate in climate change initiatives that raise awareness, reach more people, and help improve other people's lives. -
ProximaCc ProximaCc 4/20/2019 5:34 PMDenmark today has a population of 5.771 million people. According to Clean Technica, Denmark in 2017 generated 43.6% of its energy by wind. If a country such as Denmark can do that, then what's holding us from doing something similar in Maryland, Wisconsin or Colorado? All three states have a similar populations to Denmark. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONElectricity Generation Learn More about Micro WindMicro turbines can be placed on large structures to take advantage of stronger, steadier breezes. The Eiffel Tower now sports vertical axis turbines that produce electricity for use on site. Where could micro turbines potentially be installed in your city?
ProximaCc ProximaCc 4/20/2019 4:40 PMMicro wind turbines could be installed in or on the rooftops of buildings, houses and cell towers in Chapel Hill.
