Women and Girls Research Barriers to Participation and Representation
What are some of the barriers that exist to women's equal participation and/or representation in your community?

I am going to try and be more aware at noticing barriers to women in my community. My experience in the last 5 years is that more and more women are entering the engineering and design community. This industry is male-dominant but I am inspired by the amazing impact women have had in the various organizations that I have been a part.

I learned that public transportation is progressing in their technology in regards to electrically powered transportation methods. It is encouraging to know that, like most renewable energy sources, there is a net cost savings when compared to traditional transportation methods.

I learned that a large percentage of food waste contributes to negative environmental impact. Much of this food waste is contributed by the standard grocery store system. Ready-to-prepare food delivery services, even when factoring in packaging, are starting to have less of an environmental impact when compared to traditional food shopping methods.

Food Learn the Truth About Expiration Dates
How does knowing the difference between use by, sell by, and best by dates empower you to make better decisions?

It allows me to reduce my food waste by not discarding items that are still suitable for eating. I will learn to trust my own judgement of when foods should be discarded rather than blindly following a manufacturer's marketing suggestions.

I did not realize that solutions were already present throughout the world. I also learned that my region of the world would be suitable for building wave and tidal energy generation systems. I also learned that there is a prototype/demonstration facility within driving distance that I could visit in order to learn first-hand the impacts of one of these systems.

What does your vision of a sustainable community look like? What would need to be changed in order for such vision to become reality?

I believe a sustainable community features everyone taking little steps consistently to reduce their environmental impact. Recycling, reducing carbon emissions, helping each other out, sharing resources are all aspects that an individual can take to create more sustainability in their community. If we collectively contribute, no one individual will be responsible for sacrificing towards positive change.
