Almost 3,000 points:  HPL Green Squad members have planted, exercised, learned, reduced, recycled, and shared.  Instead of feeling depressed by climate change I am now excited for all the opportunities we each have to make the world a better place for today and the future.  This Saturday is GCA Earth Day Celebration and Clean Up - check it out if you can and live locally.

Nature is beautiful and universal.  Planting the right tree in the right place means generations will enjoy.

What did you find out? What is the most interesting fact you learned?

Due to climate  strategies for farming practices have to adapt. to climate change and extreme weather.  By growing  drought tolerance varieties, investing in irrigation systems (water pans) and working together farmers can have a productive harvest.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Action Track: Social Justice Give a Microloan
Globally, women typically invest a higher proportion of their earnings in their families and communities than men. Why do you think that is?

Most women have family as their top priority and its responsiblity defaults to them.  I contribute to Kiva.org  (an international nonprofit founded in 2005 in San Francisco) because  100% of every dollar goes to funding loans for businesses, many of them owned by women.

Walking to post office, deli, dry cleaners and bank in town where  I work and live in is time saving and less stressful than driving.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Materials Recycle Everything I Can
How could you incorporate other "R's" -- reduce, reuse, refuse, repair, repurpose, etc. -- into your lifestyle? How does considering implementing these "R's" make you feel?

Recycling has become expensive for Towns.  Using less paper towels, reusing plastic pots for planting, refusing straws and plastic bags  feels more responsible.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Materials Launch a Recycling Program
How can you take your commitment to sustainable living beyond yourself? How can you, personally, work toward broader change?

Staff want to recycle their yogurt and drink containers, but have always just deposited them in the trash.  Now there is a convenient way to recycle.  Every two weeks there is one recycle bin full.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Food Composting
Producing food that goes uneaten squanders many resources—seeds, water, energy, land, fertilizer, hours of labor, financial capital. Which of these kinds of waste most motivates you to change your behavior regarding food waste? Why?

    Susan Matthews 4/04/2019 1:35 PM
It is amazing how much our trash has decreased by putting vegetable and fruit scraps in the compost bin instead of the garbage pail.  I am very concerned about the landfills overflowing.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Food Reduce Animal Products
In your opinion, what contributes to people in North America eating more meat than any other countries? What does this say about North American values and ways of living?

Traditionalists, such as my husband,  believe a dinner without meat is not complete.  However, beans could be as filling and satisfying.  Also, food stores carry a large variety of  meat and chicken cuts, and fresh, wild fish is not readily available.
