  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Materials Recycle Everything I Can
How could you incorporate other "R's" -- reduce, reuse, refuse, repair, repurpose, etc. -- into your lifestyle? How does considering implementing these "R's" make you feel?

    Tuhin Misri's avatar
    Tuhin Misri 4/25/2019 7:37 AM
I plan on evaluating the current use of ALL objects in my lifestyle to gauge whether I can reduce, reuse, refuse, repair, re purpose, etc. Implementing the R's make me feel in touch with the urgent need to balance out consumption and giving back to the environment.

Beyond carbon sequestration, what other benefits do forests offer you personally?

    Tuhin Misri's avatar
    Tuhin Misri 4/24/2019 8:12 AM
Following are they key benefits that forest offer to me on a personal level:

    - Forests (trees, plants, etc.) are the the primary reason I am alive, due to their abilities to produce oxygen, needed for survival.
    - Forests harbor multiple species of organisms, which I like to observe and know further about, especially due to the ways in which different species have evolved in their own environments.
    - Forest allow for a true spiritual and natural connection for all senses, as I feel close to my inner self, when in a forest/natural setting.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION

How is planting trees good for your mental, physical, and spiritual health?

    Tuhin Misri's avatar
    Tuhin Misri 4/24/2019 8:06 AM
Planting tress improves physical health, simply due to the fact that we have a scientifically binder relationship with trees. We inhale oxygen, produced by trees as a byproduct of photosynthesis. Cn the other hand, trees need Carbon dioxide (CO2) for their living via photosynthesis. In addition, trees keep CO2, a greenhouse gas responsible for global warming, locked in them for long periods. Trees are why we are breathing and hence alive.

Tree planting is good for both spiritual and mental health, as our evolution into present day human beings has been due to greenery around us. Simple presence of trees plays a vital role, not just via their aesthetic aspects but their impact in creating a natural aura around us (via almost all senses), which aids in enhanced mental acuity and spiritual connection with our cosmic existence. For example; sages (so called spritual/yogic people) have been practicing their meditation and yogic techniques under the trees for ages and to this day.

How can you take your commitment to sustainable living beyond yourself? How can you, personally, work toward broader change?

    Tuhin Misri's avatar
    Tuhin Misri 4/24/2019 7:54 AM
By educating and assisting friends, family and community, I am working on taking commitment to sustainable living beyond myself. I would like to engage further in community and workplace activities to learn, educate and institute programs to creatively change people's current behaviors of mass consumerism to one of 'Refuse, reduce, reuse/re purpose and recycle'.

Some next steps including the following:

    1. Use of natural lights whenever possible.
    2. Not leaving the lights on, which involves educating the family members.
    3. If possibles, switching to generating my own energy via installation of solar.

Are bamboo alternatives readily available in your community? If not, what are other sustainable alternatives?

    Tuhin Misri's avatar
    Tuhin Misri 4/22/2019 1:02 PM
Use of bamboo isn't that prevalent even though there are plenty of options available online. I believe that glass, wood, etc. can be used whenever bamboo alternatives aren't available however not at the cost of cutting more trees.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Food Smaller Portions
Fun fact: Your brain and stomach register feelings of fullness after about 20 minutes of eating. While dishing food out, we tend to load our plates with more than we need. Using smaller plates helps to mitigate this. Aside from the environmental benefits, what other benefits might come out of eating smaller portions?

    Tuhin Misri 4/22/2019 1:00 PM
Besides variety of environmental benefits, the Health benefits are definitely a key. One can really improvise their overall health and cut down on excess calories thereby reducing the ever-increasing obesity rates in most of developed works, especially US.
