    Working in the travel sector we obviously have some issues with flights! Whilst we do promote travelling by train to Mongolia - it is rather a long way! We now arrange to carbon balance the flights used by our holiday and film shoot guests. We do this through C-Level who work with Plan vivo in Mongolia - https://www.clevel.co.uk/carbon-offset-projects/mongolian-nomad-project/

    Climate scientist Katharine Hayhoe states that "The reason we care about climate change is because it affects the people and places that we care about." What is happening (or will happen) in your area that will affect the people and places you care about?

    Wow - this is my favourite subject to talk about at length.

    The impact of Climate change on Mongolia is enormous.

    I don't have the time to summarise here but here is a link to my talk at the Royal Geographical Society on the subject.

    An extract from an email I just shared with our team;

    For many years we have given money to projects that we believe run/arranged by people that we trust. Having thought about a range of options including setting up a Mongolian charity of our own, setting up an award/sponsorship programme, and just giving to one established charity…. I have come full circle and suggest that we continue to do what we have always done – and support projects that we believe in that come to us via word of mouth. There will be some changes though that I suggest;

    1. I would like all of the projects that we support to be connected to getting us closer to drawdown and slowing down climate change either directly or indirectly. As you will have noticed whilst undertaking the Drawdown Ecochallenge this important remit encompasses a vast range of actions https://www.drawdown.org/

    Just taking the projects that have recently come up for us;

    Projects I would like to search out;

    Electricity Generation Learn More About Geothermal Energy
    Geothermal energy is reliable, abundant, and efficient. Project Drawdown states that public investment will play a crucial role in its expansion. In what ways (i.e. with money, time, advocacy) can you invest in geothermal energy?

    The most powerful method I have of spreading the word is to connect stories with film makers... I will try to do this.

    Until now I had no idea that Myanmar has already been looking at Geothermal for nearly a decade. http://www.thinkgeoenergy.com/myanmar-eyeing-200-mw-geothermal-development-in-the-east-of-the-country/

    I will look into this and try to get some coverage for it....

    I am already planning our next Eco Challenge. I would love to inspire others to set up their own teams. There is so much potential within this activity to spark actions that have a significant impact.

    My two sons have been thinking to make a film about Drawdown for a film competition but sadly the deadline is upon us and Easter got in the way. https://sustainabledevelopment.un.org/hlpf/2019/filmfestival

    Food Learn More about Silvopasture
    Had you heard of the term "silvopasture" before now? After learning more about it, what do you think is the biggest advantage of silvopasture?

    I hadn't really heard of Silvopasture before this challenge.

    The main benefit and my favourite word - BALANCE..

  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Land Use Learn about Temperate Forests
    As you learn more about the scope and seriousness of the environmental challenges we face, what impact does that have on your thinking and actions? What are the parts that feel overwhelming? What parts help you feel hopeful?

    Karina Moreton's avatar
    Karina Moreton 4/22/2019 2:47 PM
    I feel that scaremongering is the only way to get more people involved in this crisis - so the 12 year warning seems important. I am hopeful about the movement of the younger generation shaming those of us who are older.

    My own challenge is how to inspire more film makers to make important films that will have an impact. We have to find the powerful stories that will make people listen. It is crucial to also get the psychology right so that people embrace the changes they need to make rather than resent the messengers!
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Materials Mulch the Base of Trees and Plants
    Name some of the human activities impacting the health of water systems, both locally (your watershed) and globally (freshwater and oceans). What can you do to improve the health of water systems?

    Karina Moreton 4/22/2019 2:41 PM
    Fertilisers. Plastic overuse and disposal. Industry.

    Exposing those undertaking poor practises seems to be essential - and inspiring them to change.
