In other exciting news, I used my new ceramic + silicone lid tumbler to buy coffee today. On my walk to the office, I reflected on the other reusable mugs in my collection-stainless steel and plastic-and wondered about the environmental impact of each. Light research found that glass cups are the best alternative, while reusable plastic cups are close behind. Ceramic cups follow due to the high energy use during production, however they pose less of an environmental threat due to their biodegradable properties. Stainless steel falls somewhere between plastic and ceramic.

Depending on the material type, it takes about 20-1,000 uses for a reusable cup to make up for the greenhouse gas emissions of a single-use cup. Consequently, if a reusable cup is used fewer times than that, the single-use cup is better for the environment.

Regardless of environmental impact, each material type has a flavor impact. Plastic tends to absorb flavor. Old odors can linger (ew) and impact the flavor of your beverage in hand (terribly disappointing). Stainless steel can impart flavor and give off a metallic taste. Ceramic and glass are neutral.

    Choose wisely and party on!

    Transport Purchase a Carbon Offset
A round-trip flight from New York City to Los Angeles emits just over 1.5 tons of CO2. What can you do to reduce the number of flights you take per year?

Perfect timing for this challenge. I'll be flying to Las Vegas for vacation in Utah right after the Drawdown Challenge kicks off. I just calculated how much a round trip offset will cost - only $10. Much more affordable than expected. I will now purchase offsets every time I fly. Higher, further, faster!
