Food Learn the Truth About Expiration Dates
How does knowing the difference between use by, sell by, and best by dates empower you to make better decisions?

Confusion on the meaning behind the different date labels on food leads to billions of pounds of food waste every year. Prior to the expiration date challenge I had no clue what the difference was.

Sell by is aimed at the retailers and tells them when it should come off the shelves.
Use by and Best by are aimed at us the consumers of when it is best to consume the product.

These dates do not mean the products cannot be eaten after. The dates offer recommendations of when the food quality will begin to decrease. With this is mind, I will not immediately through anything out that has passed its expiration date unless the physical quality tells me otherwise.

    Materials Eliminate Toxic Plastics
What single-use items (e.g. straws, coffee cups, vegetable bags, plastic bags) do you regularly use? What could be substituted instead?

I use plastic bags very often when going to the grocery store. I should purchase some eco-friendly shopping bags for my trips.

    Materials Recycle Everything I Can
How could you incorporate other "R's" -- reduce, reuse, refuse, repair, repurpose, etc. -- into your lifestyle? How does considering implementing these "R's" make you feel?

I could incorporate other "R's" by Reducing the amount of food I serve myself and Reuse a water container to avoid using plastic bottle. Implementing these actions make me feel great because I know it is making a contribution to our lovely planet!
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Food Smaller Portions
Fun fact: Your brain and stomach register feelings of fullness after about 20 minutes of eating. While dishing food out, we tend to load our plates with more than we need. Using smaller plates helps to mitigate this. Aside from the environmental benefits, what other benefits might come out of eating smaller portions?

Eating smaller portions physically for our bodies is the healthier way to eat. To speed up our metabolism we should eat smaller portions but eat more portions throughout the day.
