It's not difficult to recycle but it's disappointing how little Brookhaven Town now accepts. Only #1 & #2 plastics are accepted (used to be #1-#7). Consequently, we have much more refuse to be collected. Glass must be carted to the library or senior center. Eating meatless meals can be problematic eating out but a lot more restaurants are now serving some sort of veggie burger and most will make an effort to accommodate a meatless diner.

Writing (again) to ask catalog merchants to send only email, which they do almost daily, and to cease sending paper catalogs. I also asked that they not share/sell my address to other mailing lists. It's a long process. I used to get 10+ per day. I'm down to 3-4. They're relentless, though. If you order something online, they put you back on paper mailings! I'll keep at it!

I am very distressed about the amount of refuse my household is creating since Brookhaven Town stopped accepting #3, #4, #5, #6 plastics for recycling. Also, we now have to take and glass to a recycling center or toss it in with regular garbage. This "new" policy seems regressive.

How could you incorporate other "R's" -- reduce, reuse, refuse, repair, repurpose, etc. -- into your lifestyle? How does considering implementing these "R's" make you feel?

Today, at the diner, I asked for a small piece of foil to wrap my leftovers (eggplant in a whole wheat wrap). The waiter brought a piece of paper and a Styrofoam container. I wrapped my leftovers in the paper and gave back the styrofoam box. He was confused by my actions but I felt good about the transaction.

    Food Reduce Animal Products
In your opinion, what contributes to people in North America eating more meat than any other countries? What does this say about North American values and ways of living?

We are raised to eat animals starting with baby food. Most fast food is animal based. Animal farming is a very large part of our economy. We need to change people's perception of farmed livestock as something other than living, breathing creatures worthy of humane treatment.

How does knowing the difference between use by, sell by, and best by dates empower you to make better decisions?

Foods can be safely used and not wasted based on the info provided. I have found that if the food smells good and has no mold or discoloration it is probably safe for human consumption.
