Electricity Generation Support Companies Leading in Green Energy
Every dollar you put into solar or wind is a dollar not put into traditional financial institutions. You'll also be bolstering the fossil fuel divestment movement, too. Name some companies you know that invest in green energy. How can you support them?

Bcorps are great companies to support for all the good they put back into the world. "Certified B Corporations are businesses that meet the highest standards of verified social and environmental performance, public transparency, and legal accountability to balance profit and purpose. B Corps are accelerating a global culture shift to redefine success in business and build a more inclusive and sustainable economy." Here's a list: https://bcorporation.net/directory

Food Learn the Truth About Expiration Dates
How does knowing the difference between use by, sell by, and best by dates empower you to make better decisions?

Date labels can be so misleading. In some cases you may think you have more time, but aren't considering how long it's been opened. In other cases, the product is still good but the date says otherwise. It's best to examine each product, use the smell test, and go by your personal investigation, not the stamped label.

I loved the idea of microgrids. It brings a stronger sense of community to the cause knowing that small groups (or neighborhoods) are all working together on a positive energy balance.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Electricity Generation Learn More About Geothermal Energy
Geothermal energy is reliable, abundant, and efficient. Project Drawdown states that public investment will play a crucial role in its expansion. In what ways (i.e. with money, time, advocacy) can you invest in geothermal energy?

One way is to urge my member of Congress to sign on to a congressional letter in support of funding for critical clean energy research.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Food Smaller Portions
Fun fact: Your brain and stomach register feelings of fullness after about 20 minutes of eating. While dishing food out, we tend to load our plates with more than we need. Using smaller plates helps to mitigate this. Aside from the environmental benefits, what other benefits might come out of eating smaller portions?

I like the smaller portions idea, partnered with the more frequent meals. I feel like it's stabilized my overall energy throughout the day.

I have always been pretty conscious about my plastic purchases, but recently (bc of this challenge) I've been so careful to avoid even accepting single-use containers. We ate out again the other night (fast-casual) and the woman at the counter tried giving me a plastic kids cup, with a lid and a straw. I said, "no thanks, we'll just use a glass for him." Her response was, "it's free". I said, "yes I realize that, but I don't want the waste." She said, "it's free refills" (lol). I said, "Yes, thanks. We'll just take the glass." Sometimes it feels like we're alone on this journey, we are not! Don't stop fighting the good fight.

Electricity Generation Watch a Video about Methane Digesters
What does your vision of a sustainable community look like? What would need to be changed in order for such vision to become reality?

    K T's avatar
    K T 4/10/2019 10:46 AM
In a perfect world we wouldn't have food waste... however, in a world on it's way to becoming perfect, I envision everyone would separate their food waste and send it to their local community anaerobic digester. The energy harnessed from the methane gas would power the local community and the leftover organic material would be used to fertilize local farms and gardens that then produce food for that same community.

I wish we had high-speed rails in the United States! I also loved how some of these solutions are obvious and widely available, we just aren't using as much as we could be: specifically ride-sharing, mass transit, and telepresence. We need to be better leaders in incorporating telepresence into our company... I will add this to my list!

I am lucky to have small sidewalks in my neighborhood, so I'm not complaining... that being said, I have a complaint. lol
The sidewalks are so skinny, and they drop off into the street, to the point that in some cases cars have their tires on them and I had to walk around the outside of car (in the street). In other places the shrubs were so overgrown that walking on the sidewalk was not an option. Again, I am lucky to have any sidewalks at all. (even if my son and I did have to walk single file) I just wish they were maintained a little better to encourage a culture of leisurely walking the neighborhood.

    Food Learn More about Silvopasture
Had you heard of the term "silvopasture" before now? After learning more about it, what do you think is the biggest advantage of silvopasture?

    K T's avatar
    K T 4/07/2019 6:03 PM
I love the idea of silvopasture, it seems so obvious to me. I wonder why the practice of combining livestock in a natural tree settings was ever abandoned. The biggest advantage to this seems to be the multiple opportunities of income, spread out over time, rather than just relying on one crop or type livestock. Plus, the diversity will allow for greater resilience against climate changes.
