  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Transport Research and Consider Switching to a Hybrid or Electric Vehicle
Reducing (or eliminating) exhaust emissions and improving public health are two benefits of green vehicles. What other motivators inspire you to consider switching to a more fuel-efficient vehicle?

I would like to spend less money on gas.

It has been a lot of fun to learn more about what can be done for the environment. There is a lot of good news out there and I hope we can spread the word!
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Materials Research Cement Alternatives
Concrete is a good example of a material that most of us encounter every day, but may its carbon footprint is not obvious. What other everyday materials might have a large carbon footprint? How can you find out more?

    Christine Watt's avatar
    Christine Watt 4/24/2019 5:44 AM
I will definitely look for alternative materials for everyday use, like substituting plastic with bioplastic or bamboo. We are trying to establish a whole sale monthly order for organic/environmentally friendly products at work. That would be great to reduce the overall cost of these products.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Food Reduce Animal Products
In your opinion, what contributes to people in North America eating more meat than any other countries? What does this say about North American values and ways of living?

    Christine Watt's avatar
    Christine Watt 4/24/2019 5:35 AM
Meat is very cheap in the US compared to other countries. Groceries on the other hand are often more expensive than abroad. When I lived abroad I would buy less meat and more vegetables, just to save on  grocery money. It was often stir-fry night.

What did you find out? What is the most interesting fact you learned?

    Christine Watt's avatar
    Christine Watt 4/19/2019 9:59 AM
I didn't find out any new aspects, but I wish some of the suggestions would be adopted in our area. I live 8 minutes from work, but can't find a public transportation system that is good enough for a commute to work. There is a bus, but the stop is pretty far away from my work and the schedule is very limited. I would also go to work by bike but the thought of not having a space on the road designated for bike riders scares me too much (cars can go 50mph and there is no breakdown lane).
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Materials Share Bioplastic Disposal Tips
What concerns you the most about how we are affecting the planet? Consider both local and global actions.

    Christine Watt's avatar
    Christine Watt 4/19/2019 4:58 AM
I am concerned that lots of people never think about how to save the planet and how they contribute by changing their own ways. However, I am most concerned about the reluctance of the American government and the current EPA to truly commit to making our environment a better place to live.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Food Learn More about Regenerative Agriculture
Clean air, clean water and healthy food are three reasons to care about regenerative agriculture. What are some other reasons?

    Christine Watt's avatar
    Christine Watt 4/16/2019 7:37 AM
Another reason to go to regenerative agriculture would be better yields in crops, healthier plants and carbon going back into the soil.

I was wondering what women have to do with global warming and how educating women would help. I was guessing that birth control and population size was one factor but I never knew about the economic/farming aspect of smallholders.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Land Use Research Peatlands
Much of Indonesia's peatlands have been drained so they could be replaced with palm oil or pulp and paper plantations. How can you make choices that help to protect peatlands, even if you live far away from one?

    Christine Watt's avatar
    Christine Watt 4/12/2019 7:50 AM
I will definitely check where my products come (if they come from sustainable plantations).
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Land Use Learn about Temperate Forests
As you learn more about the scope and seriousness of the environmental challenges we face, what impact does that have on your thinking and actions? What are the parts that feel overwhelming? What parts help you feel hopeful?

    Christine Watt's avatar
    Christine Watt 4/10/2019 12:37 PM
The  knowledge of what could happen if we don't react fast enough to climate change can be overwhelming - especially with the kind of news we face every day that just focuses on sensationalism and creating a story to tell. It would be great to also include positive news of what can be done and what we could work towards. It really helps to find out about what you can do as an individual and to get to know some of the awesome initiatives/projects that are out there.
