Beverly Wedda 4/24/2019 5:45 PMI'm writing about one of my chosen activities that while I didn't complete, I moved toward completion and learned something in the process. I have worked in a large medical center for over 3 yrs now, and I've never noticed a recycling bin/station anywhere during that time. I'd planned to create an initial small station in one of the staff work rooms that I use, and even brought a small bin in to use today to set it up. When I spoke with some other staff about this at a meeting today, I learned that reportedly there is at least one recycling bin on every floor of the building, and that I could ask the Environmental Engineer area to place more bins. So locating the current bins, and requesting more bins remains on my to-do list, but I'm excited to have learned all this in the process. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONAction Track: Social Justice Support Microgeneration in Low Income CountriesHow can micro energy solutions reduce inequities? Why is this important to you?
Beverly Wedda 4/24/2019 5:40 PMJust the one brief story I read from Green Empowerment where I made my donation shows this. A family was given a biosand filter system to clean their water - and they no longer get sick after drinking it. Not being sick, allows the family members to engage in whatever meaningful activities occupy their day. Particularly when work and livelihood are involved - reduces inequity. Where education is involved for the children - decreasing absenteeism reduces inequity. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONAction Track: Social Justice Improve a Bus StopHow can you advocate for transportation systems which minimize environmental impact while also meeting human needs?
Beverly Wedda 4/24/2019 5:28 PMHere in this community, some components of public transportation hold community meetings that I could attend to provider my user input. These seem to happen on a regularly scheduled basis.
During this Drawdown period of improving my bust stop, I've focused primarily on picking up litter/trash at one more problematic stop in particular. Having done so has made me much more aware of how frequent this occurs - people just put down their trash and leave it. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONElectricity Generation Explore Other Electricity Generation SolutionsWhat is the most exciting solution you explored? Why is it exciting to you?
Beverly Wedda 4/20/2019 2:40 PMI find solar power solutions most exciting, and when concentrated solar farm generation occurs alongside rooftop generation, the impact is big. There are some additional solutions mentioned that I still want to learn more about. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONLand Use Forest-Friendly Foods 1How is your diet currently impacting deforestation? What can you do to decrease your negative impact and increase your positive impact?
Beverly Wedda 4/16/2019 7:16 PMTo shift my impact, I can avoid products with palm oil by checking labels regularly. And I can focus any coffee beans or chocolate that I buy has the right rainforest label. I'll continue to eat a plant based diet, and will look to cut eggs out even more. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Learn More about Regenerative AgricultureClean air, clean water and healthy food are three reasons to care about regenerative agriculture. What are some other reasons?
Beverly Wedda 4/10/2019 7:13 PMIt's a positive feed forward cycle - supports microbes in the soil, increases water retention in the soil, increases yield and diversity of crops. All this allows for the system to sustain itself - and reduces the "need" to apply various chemicals, irrigate, etc. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONAction Track: Social Justice Support Indigenous Peoples' Land ManagementIndigenous speaker and activist Winona LaDuke says that, "most indigenous ceremonies, if you look to their essence, are about the restoration of balance — they are a reaffirmation of our relationship to creation. That is our intent: to restore, and then to retain balance and honor our part in creation." Why is balance important to sustainability?
Beverly Wedda 4/09/2019 8:39 AMFocus on individualism, with power over or control over, isn't sustainable. Relationship with and balance with is a hopeful solution for our future -
REFLECTION QUESTIONTransport Use Muscle PowerHow do your transportation choices affect your engagement in your community? Does your experience or enjoyment differ while walking, riding transit, biking or driving?
Beverly Wedda 4/08/2019 6:40 PMSo yesterday I biked to Sprouts to pick up our remaining ingredients for this week's main meal, rather than driving. (So I'm a day later recording my use of muscle power!) Today I drove our EV about 2 miles to the park and ride to take the bus to work. I love taking the bus....I can read, listen to lectures, watch scenery go by, daydream, or chat with other riders. Between Go Triangle and Go Durham buses, one can move around Durham pretty well. I encourage y'all to try it.
