I will take a walk for 20 minutes each day and take note of the infrastructure that makes walking more or less enjoyable, accessible, and possible.

Keep Track of Wasted Food
#3 Reduced Food Waste
I will keep a daily log of food I throw away during the EcoChallenge, either because it went bad before I ate it, I put too much on my plate, or it was scraps from food preparation.

Go Paperless
#70 Recycled Paper
I will reduce the amount of paper mail that I receive by 0.11lbs (0.05kg) a day or 41lbs (18.6kg) a year by opting into paperless billing, ending unwanted subscriptions and opting out of junk mail.
Participant Feed
Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.
To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

Joseph Weiner 4/30/2019 10:39 AMThis challenge taught me to appreciate my environment and my own personal health more than I already did. In addition to this, becoming more mindful and active in trying to benefit and improve my environment has added more fulfillment to my life. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONTransport Stay on the GroundWhat was your process like for restructuring your trip? How can you avoid more air travel in the future?
Joseph Weiner 4/30/2019 10:38 AMI have always been averse to flying but the choice to walk more has certainly benefitted my health. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONMaterials Eliminate Toxic PlasticsWhat single-use items (e.g. straws, coffee cups, vegetable bags, plastic bags) do you regularly use? What could be substituted instead?
Joseph Weiner 4/30/2019 10:38 AMWater bottles can always be re-used, even a plastic Aquafina bottle may be used multiple times over. We can also use metal items like thermoses for this purpose. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONMaterials Go PaperlessWhat do you want to prioritize over material 'stuff' in your own life?
Joseph Weiner 4/30/2019 10:37 AMI would like to prioritize education or experiences, essentially intangible and non-material things which cannot be lost or taken from me. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONMaterials Choose Recycled PaperGood job on choosing recycled paper! How can you take your action a step further?
Joseph Weiner 4/30/2019 10:37 AMYou can choose to also recycle plastics and metals such as aluminum cans. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Reduce Animal ProductsIn your opinion, what contributes to people in North America eating more meat than any other countries? What does this say about North American values and ways of living?
Joseph Weiner 4/30/2019 10:36 AMI would say that the overall culture and media of North America has led to us being more carnivorous. The world around you in North America constantly places pressure on you to consume meat, and there is a certain level of respect given to meat dishes that is simply not present in vegetarian ones. Eating meat will actually garner more respect and it is viewed as the thing that wealthy and powerful people will choose to do, therefore it is something that everyone in North America will aspire to do as much as possible. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Learn the Truth About Expiration DatesHow does knowing the difference between use by, sell by, and best by dates empower you to make better decisions?
Joseph Weiner 4/30/2019 10:34 AMThis empowers you to make better decisions because understanding these differences will help you to eat healthier and more efficiently spend your money on food and groceries. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Keep Track of Wasted FoodAn average American throws out about 240 lbs of food per year. The average family of four spends $1,500 a year on food that they throw out. Where would you rather use this money?
Joseph Weiner 4/30/2019 10:33 AMI would rather use this money to help myself get out of debt or perhaps have a meal other than ramen. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONBuildings and Cities Go for a Daily WalkWhat have you noticed on your daily walks? What have you enjoyed? What infrastructure changes could make your walks more enjoyable or possible?
Joseph Weiner 4/30/2019 10:33 AMI have noticed the fauna and flora around me on my day to day walks and I have come to appreciate the more typical parts of my environment such as trees and shrubs a lot more. It is easy to get sick of the things which you see every day, but learning to appreciate even the most typical things for their beauty and contribution to the environment has been very fulfilling. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Zero-waste CookingHow are environmental issues like black carbon and other emissions from cooking fires or rudimentary cookstoves also human health and social justice issues? Why do these issues matter to you?
Joseph Weiner 4/30/2019 10:31 AMThe black carbon and smoke from these cooking fires pollute our air. The condition of our air as a healthy source of oxygen for all people to breathe is certainly a social justice issue and a health issue.
