Avocados and obvs palm oil are terrible, which I knew but also coffee and pineapples. And not deforestation but I didn’t know about health impact to workers from processing cashew nuts :(

Replacing car travel with electric bikes is higher priority for urban travel than increased mass transit
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Land Use Research Peatlands
Much of Indonesia's peatlands have been drained so they could be replaced with palm oil or pulp and paper plantations. How can you make choices that help to protect peatlands, even if you live far away from one?

Peatlands hold a third of the world’s soil carbon and 10% of freshwater! I did not know that
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Food Keep Track of Wasted Food
An average American throws out about 240 lbs of food per year. The average family of four spends $1,500 a year on food that they throw out. Where would you rather use this money?

For the days I don’t eat at home, I have no idea of the food waste from the meals I ate

Seems I’ve got a colleague interested in educated girls. We’re having a chat this week about what difference it makes and what she could do :)
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Food Learn the Truth About Expiration Dates
How does knowing the difference between use by, sell by, and best by dates empower you to make better decisions?

    Meryl Wingfield's avatar
    Meryl Wingfield 4/14/2019 1:44 PM
I didn’t know this before: Typically one-third of a product's shelf-life remains after the sell-by date for the consumer to use at home.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Buildings and Cities Go for a Daily Walk
What have you noticed on your daily walks? What have you enjoyed? What infrastructure changes could make your walks more enjoyable or possible?

Designing a place to be walkable makes a big difference to how enjoyable it is - decent path/pavement and good road crossing points. Paths away from roads even better

I’m keeping a food waste log and it’s made me think about the waste from eating in a restaurant this eve. Never really considered that before
