REFLECTION QUESTIONWomen and GirlsWhat are some of the barriers that exist to women's equal participation and/or representation in your community?
Homer Aalfs 4/24/2019 4:37 PMI was profoundly shocked and disappointed to learn that 1/5 women experience physical or sexual violence at the hands of their partner, and that 49 countries do not have any legal methods in place to prevent this from happening. Not only does this remind me of the many societal and governmental institutions that residents of developed first-world countries take for granted, it further motivates me to use my geographic luck, privilege and wealth to influence greater gender, legal, and socioeconomic equity on a global scale. I think that a lack of access to schools, limited contraception/family planning resources, governmental instability, regressive socioeconomic norms, and insufficient legal protections for women and families are major contributors to unequal representation on a global scale. In my immediate community, regressive gender norms, bias, and the media are major contributors. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWomen and GirlsWhen family planning focuses on healthcare provision and meeting the expressed needs of women, it results in empowerment, equality, and well-being, and the benefits to the planet are side effects. Why is family planning an important civil rights consideration?
Homer Aalfs 4/17/2019 5:30 PMIt is imperative that women and families have the tools, resources, and information required so that they can control and make their own autonomous decisions regarding choices to have/not have children. The ability to make these decisions with ample resources and tools is an essential civil, and fundamental human right. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONLand UseHow is your diet currently impacting deforestation? What can you do to decrease your negative impact and increase your positive impact?
Homer Aalfs 4/17/2019 2:31 PMMy diet is already decent with regard to its impact on deforestation, however, there is certainly room for improvement. I learned a few things while conducting research; first of all, even "rainforest alliance" certified chocolates only require 30% of cocoa to be sourced ethically with minimal environmental impact. Also, tofu is a great alternative to meat products; while it does contain soy, a driver of deforestation, the majority of soy-related deforestation is used to feed cattle, not on things like tofu/soybean oil. I will eliminate meat from my groceries, and only eat it on occasion when dining out. I will reduce my chocolate consumption as well, and save for special occasions. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONElectricity GenerationMicro turbines can be placed on large structures to take advantage of stronger, steadier breezes. The Eiffel Tower now sports vertical axis turbines that produce electricity for use on site. Where could micro turbines potentially be installed in your city?
Homer Aalfs 4/05/2019 3:53 PMIn Seattle's downtown core, there are numerous opportunities for micro wind installation across many skyscrapers and large office buildings. Additionally, the Space Needle would have space for plenty of vertical axis wind turbines along the outside of the structure, or potentially on top (although people might be concerned with the cosmetic implications). -
REFLECTION QUESTIONTransportReducing (or eliminating) exhaust emissions and improving public health are two benefits of green vehicles. What other motivators inspire you to consider switching to a more fuel-efficient vehicle?
Homer Aalfs 4/03/2019 1:35 PMReduced noise from electric vehicles could help contribute to overall reduced traffic noise, which could benefit quality of life for those living nearby. This could make a big difference when driving through residential neighborhoods. Additionally, more fuel-efficient vehicles help an individual save money on gas. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFoodFun fact: Your brain and stomach register feelings of fullness after about 20 minutes of eating. While dishing food out, we tend to load our plates with more than we need. Using smaller plates helps to mitigate this. Aside from the environmental benefits, what other benefits might come out of eating smaller portions?
Homer Aalfs 4/03/2019 1:31 PMSmaller portions/plates could lead to a healthier diet overall and lower caloric intake. Additionally, it could reduce spending on food.
