Are bamboo alternatives readily available in your community? If not, what are other sustainable alternatives?

I went to a restaurant over the weekend and they had bamboo straws. They looked pretty cool.
I’m planning to get bamboo tooth brush and holder, utensil set and a cutting board.
I changed my floor with hardwood last year and I love it! The only problem is in winter I have to make sure is humid enough in the house.

About one third of all food produced for human consumption goes to waste.
The United States is the number one country in the world that wastes food.
It takes over 12,000 gallons of water to produce one pound of beef. Meanwhile, the largest percentage of food waste from the average American consists of meat products, and 33% ends up in a landfi.

What does your vision of a sustainable community look like? What would need to be changed in order for such vision to become reality?

    MARIA ALBULESCU's avatar
    MARIA ALBULESCU 4/18/2019 6:46 PM
A sustainable community is a community where the air and waterways are accessible and clean; where land is used efficiently and shared parks and public spaces are plentiful and easily visited; where people of different ages, income levels and cultural backgrounds share equally in environmental, social and cultural benefits; where many needs of daily life can be met within a 20-minute walk and all may be met within a 20-minute transit ride.

  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Electricity Generation Learn More about Micro Wind
Micro turbines can be placed on large structures to take advantage of stronger, steadier breezes. The Eiffel Tower now sports vertical axis turbines that produce electricity for use on site. Where could micro turbines potentially be installed in your city?

    MARIA ALBULESCU's avatar
    MARIA ALBULESCU 4/15/2019 7:06 PM
Smaller wind turbines are available for homes and homeowners. These smaller turbines can be installed on any part of your property to cover some or even all of your monthly energy needs.
There are also plenty of smaller, cheaper turbines, but these variants produce less power and are less reliable than their more expensive counterparts.

Waste-to-energy – the process of combusting waste (typically from the municipal solid waste stream) and converting it to electricity and usable heat.

I just watched “A Plastic Ocean” documentary on Netflix. Plastic is everywhere! So sad to see  wildlife dying due to plastics.
    I definitely recommend it!
