    Transport Purchase a Carbon Offset
A round-trip flight from New York City to Los Angeles emits just over 1.5 tons of CO2. What can you do to reduce the number of flights you take per year?

Limiting the number of flights my family takes is a challenge, as both of our families live far away from where we do. Most of my family is across the pond in Denmark, which is a more than 4,000 mile flight. My husband's family lives in Tennessee and Georgia, and so to visit them that's also quite a trip from our home in Seattle.

One of the ways we try to mitigate our impact is by consolidating our trips. Even though we could possibly visit more often, for shorter periods of time, we try to only take one longer trip to Europe per year and one trip to Tennessee. Another way is to purchase carbon offsets to mitigate our environmental impact. Sometimes we meet in the middle in CA or AZ, where several other family members live, meaning that fewer people in our group overall needs to fly to meet up - this year we're going to Sedona!

Finally, we try to be conscious of the environmental impact of the rest of our trips. We don't take vacations that requires flying, other than to visit family, and instead opt for more local options that we can reach by foot/bike, public transit and sometimes by car. We choose vacation trips that focus on getting outside and enjoying the beautiful Pacific Northwest, and we make sure to try to conduct our trips in a sustainable manner, such as staying in a tent and cleaning up after ourselves.

When we don't have an alternative to flying (at least if we want to see our families), this is how we try to lower our impact on the environment - every little bit counts!
