REFLECTION QUESTIONTransport Conduct Virtual MeetingsHow can you ensure that your virtual meetings honor your values and your company's culture?
Randi Anderson 4/19/2019 8:18 AMwhenever i need to meet with someone, I try to utilize telephone and videoconference to reduce their need to travel. I recall several instances when I worked in Federal Way where I was asked to come downtown Seattle for one meeting. It felt like such a waste. That is what helps drive my actions. Since I have experience with virtual meetings, I try to walk in the shoes of those not physically present and make sure they have time and space to speak up. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood CompostingProducing food that goes uneaten squanders many resources—seeds, water, energy, land, fertilizer, hours of labor, financial capital. Which of these kinds of waste most motivates you to change your behavior regarding food waste? Why?
Randi Anderson 4/19/2019 8:16 AMI teach my kids about wasting food frequently. We discuss how others could have benefitted from that food and how someone worked hard to produce that food for them and when they waste it, its disrespectful to the farmers who put a lot of work into it. To help drive the point home, we have a small planter where the kids are starting to grow their own veggies and flowers so they see that it takes some work, and so they feel proud when they grow their own food- I doubt they will waste the fruits of their own labor! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Learn the Truth About Expiration DatesHow does knowing the difference between use by, sell by, and best by dates empower you to make better decisions?
Randi Anderson 4/09/2019 7:58 AMthis was quite interesting. I typically just look for the date without reading whether its a sell by or use by or best by date- and if it is past the date I toss it out. Now I know better! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Reduce Animal ProductsIn your opinion, what contributes to people in North America eating more meat than any other countries? What does this say about North American values and ways of living?
Randi Anderson 4/08/2019 10:55 AMI think people eat a lot of meat because they view it as a great source of protein. There are so many other forms of protein, but I think people who grew up being served meat, tend to follow those same habits into adulthood. People may not know what alternative proteins exist and/or how to cook/prepare them! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Smaller PortionsFun fact: Your brain and stomach register feelings of fullness after about 20 minutes of eating. While dishing food out, we tend to load our plates with more than we need. Using smaller plates helps to mitigate this. Aside from the environmental benefits, what other benefits might come out of eating smaller portions?
Randi Anderson 4/08/2019 10:52 AMwhile on vcacation, we had a continental breakfast everyday. The first day my kids wasted a ton of food- so every day thereafter, I helped them take smaller portions and really think about if they were going to eat it or not before they put it on their plates-
Jeni Spamer 4/19/2019 12:13 PMThe funny thing is, at a restaurant I will often overeat just to avoid "wasting" a little bit of food - if I don't think it would be worth taking home, or I'm on vacation and don't have a place to keep it, etc. If only we could adjust portions at restaurants!
