What single-use items (e.g. straws, coffee cups, vegetable bags, plastic bags) do you regularly use? What could be substituted instead?

I don't use plastic straws anymore; instead I use reusable metal ones. Instead of plastic bags, I use containers and reusable resin wrap. I also buy in bulk instead of using small not recyclable containers. I wonder if there are any trash bags that are compostable.

What does your vision of a sustainable community look like? What would need to be changed in order for such vision to become reality?

A sustainable community has a neighborhood small digester and uses solar or wind energy. Food scraps are composted to feed a community garden where people can grow their own food. Beehives are also part of the community. Neighbors work together to make use of these alternatives.  We should pressure our political leaders and inform other people to try make this vision a reality.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Food Composting
Producing food that goes uneaten squanders many resources—seeds, water, energy, land, fertilizer, hours of labor, financial capital. Which of these kinds of waste most motivates you to change your behavior regarding food waste? Why?

I hardly ever throw food away. We eat leftovers or use it for another dish. We also use reusable resin wrapping film so that food lasts longer. To me, the energy related to food waste is the worst.

Sustainable energy is so much better than traditional energy: it is limitless (wind, solar..) and it only requires a small investment at the beginning. The planet will thank you.
