Kathleen Brett 4/24/2019 7:51 PMI have enjoyed shopping at the farmers market and feel rewarded that I finally treated myself to joining a CSA. I have always wanted to join one and this really forced me to do the research and join. I think I will really enjoy the experience this summer. -
Kathleen Brett 4/24/2019 7:48 PMWhile I have done so many great challenges in the three weeks and the team experience has been so rewarding, this has give me the initiative to move forward and continue my own private challenges. -
Kathleen Brett 4/24/2019 7:47 PMI read so many great articles that I never would have read during the experience that strengthened my understanding of what businesses are doing for the future of recycling especially with plastics. -
Reflection QuestionWomen and Girls Support Women-Owned BusinessesGlobally, women typically invest a higher proportion of their earnings in their families and communities than men. How can you better support communities by supporting women? Can you share any past experiences that may help others take action?
Kathleen Brett 4/21/2019 4:59 AMI try to buy jewelry gifts from Heather at seaglass and sunsets, a locally owned, woman, based business. Heather walks the beach every morning on either the north or south shore and searches for mostly beach glsss she turns into jewelry. However, she also cleans the beach. She always shows her treasures along with the garbage of the day she has cleaned up. She organizes local beach clean up days with her customers and truly cares about her environment. I find Heather to be more than just a vendor. I truly feel she gives back to her community and her environment. She helps others commit to this cycle as well. -
Kathleen Brett 4/14/2019 8:38 PMToday I went to my local farmers market again and purchased fresh vegetables from a local farmer, we spoke about what vegetables would move from the hot house to outdoors in the next week or so. We also spoke about the snow peas that she has growing that would be getting larger, and the tomato varieties she would have this summer. -
Kathleen Brett 4/07/2019 7:03 PMToday I shopped at the Port Jeff farmers market for the Eco challenge! I bought locally grown broccoli, cauliflower, purple, orange and white carrots, sea beans, tomatoes, cucumbers, snow peas, spring mix lettuce and fresh garlic. I had a great conversation with the local grower that explained to me the hydroponics and hot house growing process that is used now and then the three local properties they use to grow their produce for summer and fall. They also recycle their materials and containers. I had a great healthy meatless meal with a lot of my fresh picks tonight and pre packaged my meals for tomorrow. It was a very enjoyable experience. -
Kathleen Brett 4/06/2019 7:02 PMToday I read an article about a brewery company in Delray, Florida that developed a bio gradable six pack ring for their beverages. We all know plastic six pack rings are harmful to marine life. They developed theirs using a wheat and barley product which becomes a snack for marine life! The wheat and barley is compressed into a durable material that can survive transport and refrigeration. It is compostable if properly disposed, yet if caught in a litter situation, it will be bio gradable. While in an early phase, the company hopes other beverage distributors will come aboard and help reduce the manufacturing costs. #saltwaterbrewery #E6PR -
Kathleen Brett 4/05/2019 12:23 PMToday I joined my local Andrews Family Farm CSA for the summer! I am excited to continue onward with this challenge and know I will already have continued challenges for myself in place. This will help me continue with eating meatless/vegan meals and smaller portions. -
Kathleen Brett 4/03/2019 7:50 PMI was at the high school I graduated from tonight, so I walked there. I was unable to use the track as there was an event going on, so I used the sidewalks and parking lot. The ground was was in good shape and the landscaping neat. It was nice to see the signs of spring coming alive and the grounds well maintained. I felt focused on my challenge and thought it was a great first day and was excited for the challenges that are yet to come. -
Kathleen Brett 4/03/2019 7:40 PMThis morning I contributed to the plant based pot luck at work. This helped me achieve one of my two meatless meal goals, which actually turned into three. I also ate on smaller plates and tried to broaden my goal. I enjoyed challenging myself to create something plant based to share for the pot luck and hope we have another one soon!
