REFLECTION QUESTIONTransportHalf of all trips made in the US are three miles or less; 72% of them are driven. Private vehicles account for 60% of trips of a mile or less. Do you often drive short distances instead of biking or walking? If so, how might incorporating an electric bike into your lifestyle help you make more climate-friendly choices?
Melanie Brown 4/22/2019 9:07 AMI typically walk, bus or (occasionally) bike short distances. I personally am not a fan of electric bikes, but I suppose incorporating one into my lifestyle would speed up my usual walking commutes. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWomen and GirlsGlobally, women typically invest a higher proportion of their earnings in their families and communities than men. How can you better support communities by supporting women? Can you share any past experiences that may help others take action?
Melanie Brown 4/22/2019 9:05 AMI can support the local-women owned business in my neighborhood (which luckily, there are several that I already frequent and enjoy). Another great place to look for women owned business's are farmer's markets! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONLand UseAre bamboo alternatives readily available in your community? If not, what are other sustainable alternatives?
Melanie Brown 4/22/2019 9:03 AMYes, they are. Between the local co-op and the specialty aisle at most grocery stores in Seattle, bamboo alternatives are pretty common. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONBuildings and CitiesWhat have you noticed on your daily walks? What have you enjoyed? What infrastructure changes could make your walks more enjoyable or possible?
Melanie Brown 4/22/2019 9:02 AMThe area between where I live and work has segments of the side walk that could use some attention. Other than that, I am pretty lucky to live in a readily walkable area. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFoodAn average American throws out about 240 lbs of food per year. The average family of four spends $1,500 a year on food that they throw out. Where would you rather use this money?
Melanie Brown 4/22/2019 9:01 AMI would love to use the savings from eliminating food waste from my life and put that money towards my garden!
