Wow, this is getting close - I like the idea of buying products from sustainable companies like I did for companies that harm animals in testing.  A new thing for me going forward!
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Materials Eliminate Toxic Plastics
What single-use items (e.g. straws, coffee cups, vegetable bags, plastic bags) do you regularly use? What could be substituted instead?

    Karen Bytnar's avatar
    Karen Bytnar 4/23/2019 4:00 AM
I rarely use single use items - straws in the summer but I have always been conscious of the idea of throw away use.

Looking to take on my challenges today!
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Electricity Generation Support Companies Leading in Green Energy
Every dollar you put into solar or wind is a dollar not put into traditional financial institutions. You'll also be bolstering the fossil fuel divestment movement, too. Name some companies you know that invest in green energy. How can you support them?

    Karen Bytnar 4/22/2019 6:43 PM
I know whole foods does and I always stay away from companies that harm animals for testing.  Seem like renewable energy could be a thing for me now too.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Electricity Generation Spread the Word about Energy Alternatives
What inspiration and wisdom can you gather from your family, faith, or community traditions that would help you in both communicating about and addressing our most pressing energy issues?

    Karen Bytnar's avatar
    Karen Bytnar 4/22/2019 6:41 PM
Simply turning off lights in a room after you leave is the easiest.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Food Keep Track of Wasted Food
An average American throws out about 240 lbs of food per year. The average family of four spends $1,500 a year on food that they throw out. Where would you rather use this money?

I have cats so just about never do I waste food so if i did have this kind of extra money I would donate to charities for animals.

I try to do the same; giving dog friendly foods to them such as meat scraps, veggies and apple cores
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Food Reduce Animal Products
In your opinion, what contributes to people in North America eating more meat than any other countries? What does this say about North American values and ways of living?

    Karen Bytnar's avatar
    Karen Bytnar 4/22/2019 5:34 AM
North America has a vast farming community and lands that gives us the ability to farm more freely and create as much land animal foods as we need.  However, in other countries the expense and use of farm animals for meat is less available and or more expensive so plant based diets are more prevalent.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Food Zero-waste Cooking
How are environmental issues like black carbon and other emissions from cooking fires or rudimentary cookstoves also human health and social justice issues? Why do these issues matter to you?

    Karen Bytnar's avatar
    Karen Bytnar 4/22/2019 5:27 AM
Cooking requires energy and energy has to come from somewhere.  The resources to create the stovetop fire is caused by extracting resources in the ground which usually is in the rural environments where resources and land is much more available and less restrictive and much of the economic advantage is shipped to the larger cities.
