Electricity Generation

Watch a Video about Methane Digesters

#30 Methane Digesters (large), #64 Methane Digesters (small)

I will watch a video about methane digesters (also commonly known as anaerobic digesters).

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Materials

Recycle Everything I Can

#55 Household Recycling

I will recycle all materials that are accepted by local haulers or drop stations in my community.

COMPLETED 3
DAILY ACTIONS

Food

Smaller Portions

#3 Reduced Food Waste

I will use smaller plates and/or serve smaller portions when dishing out food.

COMPLETED 2
DAILY ACTIONS

Food

Keep Track of Wasted Food

#3 Reduced Food Waste

I will keep a daily log of food I throw away during the EcoChallenge, either because it went bad before I ate it, I put too much on my plate, or it was scraps from food preparation.

COMPLETED 2
DAILY ACTIONS

Transport

Use Muscle Power

#49 Cars

I will cut my car trip mileage by only taking necessary trips, and I will only use muscle-powered transportation for all other trips.

COMPLETED 1
DAILY ACTION

Participant Feed

Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.

To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

I have thrown away (almost) no food since the start of the challenge. I order less than I normally do.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Transport Use Muscle Power
How do your transportation choices affect your engagement in your community? Does your experience or enjoyment differ while walking, riding transit, biking or driving?

When you walk around the neighborhood, you get a chance to talk with your neighbors instead of just waving at them as you drive by.
I enjoy walking, especially when I have my camera with me, and especially in the spring and fall.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Materials Recycle Everything I Can
How could you incorporate other "R's" -- reduce, reuse, refuse, repair, repurpose, etc. -- into your lifestyle? How does considering implementing these "R's" make you feel?

    Chuck Campbell 4/03/2019 11:18 AM
Incorporating the "R's" would make me feel pretty good.
Not only am I helping the environment, it saves me money as well.
I plan on putting a reminder in my kitchen to continually be thinking about Reduce, Reuse, Refuse, etc...

I am very diligent about recycling everything I can in my household. I even make it a point to check and sort my recycle bins before I put them out for collection to make sure I do not accidentally mix non-recyclables with the recyclables. I also make sure the recyclables are properly sorted. For waste that I cannot recycle, I try to figure ways to reuse them as much as I can in order to minimize what goes to the landfill. I also try to reduce the amount that I have to recycle as much as possible.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Food Smaller Portions
Fun fact: Your brain and stomach register feelings of fullness after about 20 minutes of eating. While dishing food out, we tend to load our plates with more than we need. Using smaller plates helps to mitigate this. Aside from the environmental benefits, what other benefits might come out of eating smaller portions?

A definitely benefit would be weight management.
Also, it would be less expensive to eat less food.
    That should be obvious.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Food Keep Track of Wasted Food
An average American throws out about 240 lbs of food per year. The average family of four spends $1,500 a year on food that they throw out. Where would you rather use this money?

I would increase my donations to charities.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Electricity Generation Watch a Video about Methane Digesters
What does your vision of a sustainable community look like? What would need to be changed in order for such vision to become reality?

    Chuck Campbell's avatar

A sustainable community might be one where neighbors could build a small methane digester together, and find ways to use the fuel themselves.
What would need to change is our knowledge and understanding of how digesters work, how to construct one safely, and how to maintain and "feed" them. That would require an deeper understanding of anaerobic decay, bacteria, acids, and high and low energy fuels.
