How can I use volunteering at the YMCA in this challenge? I didn't see anything in land-use that was applicable

In the food challenge, there is an entry asking you to learn more about other food solutions in the Drawdown book. I think that you could get credit for time spent with the Sharing the Harvest people at the YMCA could count for that time!

What does your vision of a sustainable community look like? What would need to be changed in order for such vision to become reality?

A sustainable community means one where people look out for one another and feel proud to be a part together. People spend time outside together, share goods and services, and look out for one another

    Materials Recycle Everything I Can
How could you incorporate other "R's" -- reduce, reuse, refuse, repair, repurpose, etc. -- into your lifestyle? How does considering implementing these "R's" make you feel?

I already try to limit plastic waste from shopping for food, especially plastic wrapping for foods like bread. But I know there is so much more to be aware of. Trying to clean out tupperware containers that seem disgusting is worth my disgust to save the planet. Repairing items is a skill I do not possess either but is something i definitely hope to try to do more of in the future! Recycling helps save the planet but the other R's are may even be more important.

    Materials Research Cement Alternatives
Concrete is a good example of a material that most of us encounter every day, but may its carbon footprint is not obvious. What other everyday materials might have a large carbon footprint? How can you find out more?

Food! Especially fruits that come from California or across the world. The infrastructure needed to grow and transport these foods is immense! People can act to change by shopping more locally and looking at food sources in the grocery store. There are also probably many websites that rank farms and other agricultural systems on sustainability or that you can research where they are growing so you know what food comes from where.

How does environmental quality influence your sense of community?

I think a cleaner, greener community matters greatly to me and my sense of community! Knowing people in the area care about work to preserve their environment gives me a stronger sense of place. Activities like cleanups are great ways to meet people in the community and do work to preserve the one thing we all share: this earth
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Food Keep Track of Wasted Food
An average American throws out about 240 lbs of food per year. The average family of four spends $1,500 a year on food that they throw out. Where would you rather use this money?

I would put it in my IRA!
