Participant Feed

Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.

To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Women and Girls Support Women-Owned Businesses
Globally, women typically invest a higher proportion of their earnings in their families and communities than men. How can you better support communities by supporting women? Can you share any past experiences that may help others take action?

I was surprised to discover, not only the number of businesses in my community owned by women, but also the range of businesses.  I will certainly consider supporting these businesses when I required their services.  From your statement above, that will  benefit the community, as well as the business.

    Transport Use Muscle Power
How do your transportation choices affect your engagement in your community? Does your experience or enjoyment differ while walking, riding transit, biking or driving?

When I am driving in my car, I have contact with a limited number of people.  When I am walking or taking public transportation, the opportunity exists for me to connect with many others in my community.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Food Support Local Food Systems
Dependable fresh food, supporting local farmers and building resilient communities are just a few benefits of local food systems. Which of these (or other) advantages inspire you the most?

I think supporting local farmers inspires me the most.  If they cannot make a living we will have to import more items, which will increase the cost and the use of fuel for transportation.  It drives me crazy that we live in the #2 apple producing state - and that apples keep well in cold storage, but you often see apples in our supermarkets that are labeled 'product of NewZealand'!

What are other easy and low-cost ways to reduce your water usage at home?

I can explore ways to use grey water, rather than using clean tap water.  I have been using the water from my birds' water cups and water that is left in my reusable water bottle to water my houseplants, rather than just pouring it down the drain.

  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Food Composting
Producing food that goes uneaten squanders many resources—seeds, water, energy, land, fertilizer, hours of labor, financial capital. Which of these kinds of waste most motivates you to change your behavior regarding food waste? Why?

I have come to realize the amount of energy that is used to produce a food item - from the fuel used on the farm, to the fuel used in the transportation, processing, and packaging of the item, and to the fuel used to cart it away to a landfill if it is not used.  I realize that with very little effort, I can improve in this area and reduce my carbon footprint.
