I did my best! I was realistic with my challenges and accomplished them all. This was a fun, community building competition! Thanks for organizing this, Chantal!
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Women and Girls Give a Microloan
Globally, women typically invest a higher proportion of their earnings in their families and communities than men. Why do you think that is?

Is this because women are more community minded? Perhaps women find more of their identity in their family/community and therefore invest in it more(?)
  • REFLECTION QUESTION

Name some of the human activities impacting the health of water systems, both locally (your watershed) and globally (freshwater and oceans). What can you do to improve the health of water systems?

The first few that come to mind are ... fertilizers, pesticides, micro-plastics, and flushing medications down the drain.  One small step I have taken is that I've stopped using face wash and toothpaste that contain the small plastic "micro-beads".  I also just took a load of expired medications to a proper disposal site.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Food Composting
Producing food that goes uneaten squanders many resources—seeds, water, energy, land, fertilizer, hours of labor, financial capital. Which of these kinds of waste most motivates you to change your behavior regarding food waste? Why?

I feel most motivated by wasted water because clean water is such a precious commodity, one that we take for granted.

I’m just starting to compost again. I tried years ago but without doing my research. Psyched to do it right this time!

What does your vision of a sustainable community look like? What would need to be changed in order for such vision to become reality?

I enjoyed learning about methane digesters from this video. Generating a cleaner energy source, reducing the warming effect of methane gas, and producing fertilizer ... it sounds like a win! My "sustainable community" has grown to incorporate our micro-community, as microorganisms are the all important helpers in this process. This video is inspiring and opened up my vision for a sustainable community.
