Participant Feed

Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.

It has come to my attention that some people are writing things in the feed that aren't productive. Please don't just write things to get points. That's not what this challenge is for. Also completing challenges that you didn't do is not the point. The point is to inform and take action in global warming.

I have just (tried) researching about properly disposing of refrigerators and air conditioners. I learned a lot, but I am still confused. I learned about how countries banned past refrigerators that destroyed the ozone layer, but the fridges we replaced them with are 1,000-9,000 times worse than carbon dioxide (CO2) when it comes to global warming. But here is where the problem comes in, I couldn't answer the question. It told me to research proper ways of disposing these refrigerators, but I couldn't find any good websites. So here is a eco friendly refrigerator that doesn't use those chemicals. Here's an Amazon link https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00OBWEGQC/ref=as_li_qf_asin_il_tl?ie=UTF8&tag=gene065c-20&creative=9325&linkCode=as2&creativeASIN=B00OBWEGQC&linkId=014fa22c9c93d09da7b0b6482f588391. These types of fridges are prone to failure though. So I challenge you to find a chemical that is eco friendly but also consistently works.

Wow!!! Great challenge you have given us.  I looked up the Amazon link because I was very curious.  I could not find where it says they don't use these chemicals.  Can you help me?

I just researched about heat pumps and let me just say, I'm excited for these. They have interesting technology and are environmentally friendly. The basic premise is that a instead of wasting a ton of energy on heating and cooling, you install these pumps that can take air from outside and heat and cool it for use. There are two big negatives though. First of all if you live somewhere really cold you'll have to get some really special heat pumps, and sometimes they just won't work at all, and they are expensive.  A single heat pump costs $800-$1000, its ridiculous. Which here is my conclusion question, why are a lot of Eco friendly options expensive? Can you think of any examples of this?

I went into researching high speed rails hoping that some day these fast driving, Eco friendly trains would be whipping down the city of Chicago, now I have a different opinion. These trains would be perfect for this challenge because they are better for the Eco system, but engineering problems, high prices, and lawsuits have prevented a successful high speed rail in the US. The Californian high speed rail proposition included a 77 billion dollar price. Some areas don't have the room and a lot of people just don't want to pay their tax dollars for it, and I wouldn't either. Which now begs the question, why in China and Japan work, but our attempts fail?
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Food Composting
Producing food that goes uneaten squanders many resources—seeds, water, energy, land, fertilizer, hours of labor, financial capital. Which of these kinds of waste most motivates you to change your behavior regarding food waste? Why?

I wonder how to set up a compost bin and how large should it be?

Check out this website, Charlie!  I think there are some others in our group who are interested in this.  Perhaps we can get a team researching and creating this.

I have asked my mommy to start a compost bin in my house. She said I will have to do some research before collecting banana peels.
