Learn More about Silvopasture
#9 Silvopasture
I will spend at least 15 minutes watching videos and/or reading about the environmental benefits of silvopasture.
Land Use
Research Peatlands
#13 Peatlands
I will spend 55 minutes researching the environmental benefits of peatlands and what is being done around the world to conserve and restore them.
Electricity Generation
Learn More about Micro Wind
#76 Micro Wind
I will spend at least 15 minutes learning more about the energy generation potential of Micro Wind.
Transport
Stay on the Ground
#43 Airplanes, #63 Telepresence
Instead of traveling by plane, I will find an alternative way to accomplish the goals of an upcoming trip (i.e. telepresence, vacation locally).
Transport
Use Public Transit
#37 Mass Transit
I will use public transit 8 mile(s) per day and avoid sending up to 1.31 lbs of CO2 into Earth's atmosphere.
Transport
Try Carpooling
#75 Ridesharing
I will commute by carpool 5 mile(s) per day and avoid sending up to 2.02 lbs of CO2 into Earth's atmosphere.
Buildings and Cities
Choose LED Bulbs
#33 LED Lighting (Household)
I will replace 2 incandescent lightbulb(s) with Energy Star-certified LED bulbs, saving up to $14 per fixture per year.
Participant Feed
Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.

REFLECTION QUESTIONElectricity Generation Learn More about Micro WindMicro turbines can be placed on large structures to take advantage of stronger, steadier breezes. The Eiffel Tower now sports vertical axis turbines that produce electricity for use on site. Where could micro turbines potentially be installed in your city?
Paddock Davey 4/24/2019 11:38 AMI think that places such as in open fields that nobody uses, on top of tall buildings, and even on top of some of the mountains in our region. Due to the fact that Asheville has such a high elevation, the wind has a large impact and could be harnessed for large green energy production. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Learn More about SilvopastureHad you heard of the term "silvopasture" before now? After learning more about it, what do you think is the biggest advantage of silvopasture?
Paddock Davey 4/24/2019 11:33 AMI have never heard of this term before today, but now that I have learned about the benefits of a silvopasture, I believe that this could be a very positive process used for saving the environment, giving farmers more money, and even helping prevent global warming. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONLand Use Research PeatlandsMuch of Indonesia's peatlands have been drained so they could be replaced with palm oil or pulp and paper plantations. How can you make choices that help to protect peatlands, even if you live far away from one?
Paddock Davey 4/24/2019 11:15 AMI can raise awareness in my communities about this horrible act of increasing the amount of carbon in the atmosphere by a lot. The peat stores about 42 of all the grounds carbon, and is essential for the life cycle of carbon. I can also donate to organizations attempting to prevent the peat from being destroyed. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONTransport Use Public TransitHow has your access to various kinds of transporation throughout your life influenced your current attitudes about transportation and your transportation behavior?
Paddock Davey 4/24/2019 11:05 AMI have realized while using my own car is more comfortable and quick, city transportation, such as a bus, can be extremely helpful to the environment. The city bus is like one huge carpool for the whole city, and preventing that many cars from being on the streets producing CO2 is very good for Asheville's carbon footprint. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONTransport Stay on the GroundWhat was your process like for restructuring your trip? How can you avoid more air travel in the future?
Paddock Davey 4/24/2019 4:22 AMWe actually didn't have to restructure our trip very much, we just had to leave a day early in order to get to Baltimore on time. This meant starting the 9 hour drive on Sunday, rather than flying for 1 to 2 hours on Monday morning. In the future, we can just use the car to drive longer distances that we would usually drive any time we can, to reduce our carbon footprint. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONBuildings and Cities Choose LED BulbsChanging lightbulbs is an excellent first step toward energy efficiency! What's next for you?
Paddock Davey 4/24/2019 4:18 AMI would like to think that the next step for our family would be to install solar panels on our house. While the cost to implant them would be high, over time, since our house's roof faces east and west, they would pay for themselves and provide clean green energy. All this would also help reduce our carbon footprint. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONTransport Try CarpoolingList some of the places you frequent often (work, grocery store, natural areas). Could you choose one or two days a week to schedule driving with a friend, neighbor or co-worker to these places?
Paddock Davey 4/23/2019 9:59 AMThe high school, my house, and lots of stores in North Asheville. Yes, on days that our school bus is very late, me and my friends that live nearby will all get one of our parents to drive us into school, rather than all of us getting driven in separately. Also, every day after track, me and my friends all carpool home to save gas and reduce our CO2 footprint.
