  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Women and Girls Give a Microloan
Globally, women typically invest a higher proportion of their earnings in their families and communities than men. Why do you think that is?

    Charlene Day's avatar
    Charlene Day 4/24/2019 6:00 PM
    Because women are the caregivers.

    • Milithza Silva's avatar

Another reason is because many of the tasks done by the caregiver go unpaid but if all those activities were quantified it would correspond to a big chunk of money.

What did you learn about the need for family planning? Share some of the learning with your friends!

It is important for women to learn about family planning as each individual adds to the carbon load.

  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Food Zero-waste Cooking
How are environmental issues like black carbon and other emissions from cooking fires or rudimentary cookstoves also human health and social justice issues? Why do these issues matter to you?

    Charlene Day's avatar
    Charlene Day 4/03/2019 7:47 PM
Exposure to black carbon is linked to health impacts such as cardiopulmonary morbidity and mortality, and reducing people’s exposure to particles containing black carbon will therefore also reduce such adverse health impacts. Countries where there is no electricity women cook over open fires so that leads to social justice issues, In Canada the forest fires are a big issue.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Land Use Buy Bamboo
Are bamboo alternatives readily available in your community? If not, what are other sustainable alternatives?

    Charlene Day's avatar
    Charlene Day 4/03/2019 7:41 PM
You have to look for them but I have bought bamboo clothing in my community.

  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Land Use Forest-Friendly Foods 1
How is your diet currently impacting deforestation? What can you do to decrease your negative impact and increase your positive impact?

    Charlene Day's avatar
    Charlene Day 3/29/2019 7:25 PM
When I don't read labels and buy items that contain ingredients that have resulted in clear cutting. I don't eat meat so hopefully that will contribute to making a positive impact somewhere. I am being more conscious to read the labels and not buy foods containing palm oil.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Electricity Generation Watch a Video about Methane Digesters
What does your vision of a sustainable community look like? What would need to be changed in order for such vision to become reality?

    Charlene Day's avatar
    Charlene Day 3/29/2019 7:19 PM
A community where all the needs of the individuals were met and where people feel safe, healthy and cared for. Where the environment was considered a living being and therefore cared for and honoured. Where people were spiritually fulfilled and there was social justice. What has to change is awareness. That can come from personal development and the desire to make the world a better place. And a whole lot of education.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
Action Track: Social Justice Learn about Local Indigenous Practices
What did you learn about indigenous peoples' land management that you can apply in your own life?

    Charlene Day's avatar
    Charlene Day 3/29/2019 7:11 PM
In my garden, I respect the plants and the earth the plants are grown in. I have a different relationship with them after speaking to some indigenous elders. I am much more connected now.

When we breathe the air after there has been a forest fire for instance, it is very detrimental to our health. Also in countries where they are cooking their food over open fires because they can't afford a healthier version of cooking, that is a social justice issue. I have been affected by the forest fires as I have relatives living in BC. so have had to wear a mask in order to go outside to lessen the damage from the black carbon. So I have had first hand experience and see the damage it has on our health.
