Jodi Dooley 4/23/2019 3:34 PMExcited that we accomplished so much as a group. Let’s keep up all these great habits we’ve begun! -
Jodi Dooley 4/19/2019 3:55 PMOn vacation, even though I didn’t reach some of my challenges, we bicycled to get groceries and walked 10,000 steps each day. Everywhere we went we asked for no plastic bags and carried our own. On our six day trip we were given only 2 plastic. Rest of time we refused and we did shop almost everyday. Even two felt like too much. -
Jodi Dooley 4/19/2019 6:41 AMOn vacation I’ve had a harder time eating 2 meatless meals a day. I guess my planning for our trip could have been better. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONLand UseAre bamboo alternatives readily available in your community? If not, what are other sustainable alternatives?
Jodi Dooley 4/19/2019 6:38 AMI am starting to see some bamboo alternatives locally but mainly they must be ordered on line. I feel somewhat in a paradox. I ordered bamboo toothbrushes but mainly use an electric toothbrush at home. I know it’s better font teeth. I will use the bamboo on trips. -
Jodi Dooley 4/17/2019 10:43 AMIt’s been difficult to stick to two meatless meals a day while on vacation. We’re camping and BBQing. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFoodDependable fresh food, supporting local farmers and building resilient communities are just a few benefits of local food systems. Which of these (or other) advantages inspire you the most?
Jodi Dooley 4/09/2019 3:55 PMI love supporting local farmers, getting to know them personally, and learning their stories. I like knowing where my food comes from. Visiting Farmer’s Market is such a fun activity for everyone. I see families and children I know. It brings people together. Isn’t that what we want for our world? -
Jodi Dooley 4/07/2019 8:03 AMJust set up a donation page to help fund girl’s education around the world through The Malala Fund on FB. I read Malala’s story a few years ago. She was the young Pakistani activist shot by the Taliban. She almost trying to get an education.-

Jodi Dooley 4/04/2019 4:05 AMJust read an article about looking for products with the Rainforest Alliance seal. They use hybrids that need much less sun, thus cause much less deforestation. As I buy my coffee and chocolate, I will look for these symbols. -
Jodi Dooley 3/21/2019 4:03 AMhttps://www.lushusa.com/
I’ve been using Lush beauty products for about 5 years. They are natural and plastic-free, biodegradable and don’t put harmful chemicals in the environment. . I especially love their shampoo bars, which you store in reuseable tins. They make my hair feel great and NO plastic bottles! None of their products come in plastic! Great philosophy, too!-
Jodi Dooley 4/09/2019 4:41 PMPetra,
Lush is on-line but going to a store is a treat. There’s one in Westchester Mall and about three at least in NYC. They let you try products and explain each. Those are the stores I know but there may be more. -

REFLECTION QUESTIONMaterialsName some of the human activities impacting the health of water systems, both locally (your watershed) and globally (freshwater and oceans). What can you do to improve the health of water systems?
Jodi Dooley 3/13/2019 2:56 PMI think what I’ve noticed most as I walk by the Hudson River and even down my own road, which has wetlands and a local stream (Landsman Kill) is the amount of drink cans, fast food containers and plastic bags I see. I have noticed plastic bottles and other garbage as I walk my dogs by the river. I have picked up garbage as I walk but I need to make a more concerted effort to do so each time I walk my dogs. I think my new mantra should be, “Always leave it better than you found it!”-
Petra Ruger 4/08/2019 5:42 AMThank you for the reminder to bring a bag when waking and hiking to pick up trash and recycling. On Saturday I saw a mother and son picking up garbage on the side of rt 308. Yay! -
Leola Specht 3/20/2019 12:53 PMI agree Jodi and pick up trash & recyclables everywhere everyday too. You're right, more people reducing single-use disposables and picking up trash for the eco-challenge, the cleaner Rhinebeck will be :-)
