Action Track: Social Justice

Improve a Bus Stop

#37 Mass Transit

I will improve a bus stop in my neighborhood by posting the stop schedule, adding seating or shelter, adding art or flowers, picking up litter, or implementing some other small improvement.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Food

Keep Track of Wasted Food

#3 Reduced Food Waste

I will keep a daily log of food I throw away during the EcoChallenge, either because it went bad before I ate it, I put too much on my plate, or it was scraps from food preparation.

COMPLETED 13
DAILY ACTIONS

Food

Support Local Food Systems

#4 Plant-Rich Diet

I will source 30 percent of my food from local producers each day. This could include signing up for a local CSA, buying from a farmer's market, visiting a food co-op, foraging with a local group, or growing my own ingredients.

COMPLETED 9
DAILY ACTIONS

Electricity Generation

Learn More about Biomass

#34 Biomass

I will spend at least 20 minutes learning more about the energy generation potential of biomass.

UNCOMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

How can you advocate for transportation systems which minimize environmental impact while also meeting human needs?

This was more complicated than I expected. When we arrived, I noticed that the trash can was broken, meaning all of the trash thrown in the van was blowing down the street. I think the most impactful thing I can do for this bus stop is to call Citizens Service Bureau and have the van replaced.

I planted some flowers, picked up trash, and my friend lacy drew pretty pictures everywhere with chalk paint.

I may have just eaten 1 1/2 lunches to prevent food waste at the office. I'm pretty sure that's not how this challenge was supposed to work, but there you have it.

Keeping a food waste log is helping me to be better organized in my fridge, rotating older things to the front and really trying to use things before they spoil. I should probably do this all year.

Yeah and at the office for REAL. It's crazy how much food we let go bad -especially for someone who's supposedly conscious about food waste in America.

    Food
An average American throws out about 240 lbs of food per year. The average family of four spends $1,500 a year on food that they throw out. Where would you rather use this money?

I'd rather buy a bunch of great camping gear.
