  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Women and Girls
Globally, women typically invest a higher proportion of their earnings in their families and communities than men. How can you better support communities by supporting women? Can you share any past experiences that may help others take action?

I come from a single family home, lead by my mother and every day I get to witness the hard work she puts into her job and to maintaining our home. It's important to me that after centuries of being the backbone of society, women get a chance to lead in businesses and communities. There are groups that i've joined specifically dedicated towards women led businesses both locally and on the Facebook, and i encourage people to find their own women owned businesses in their communities.

What have you noticed on your daily walks? What have you enjoyed? What infrastructure changes could make your walks more enjoyable or possible?

Most of my walking is done on campus and at the park near my home. Because of the spacing between buildings on campus, it's always nice to be able to look at the sky and notice the clouds, the birds. If it's at night, it's great to look at stars. At the park near my home, there are no buildings nearby so walking is even more enjoyable there. In industrial and urban areas, buildings tend to be packed close together, so if city planners could allow for more space between them, I think more people would appreciate a good walk through their campuses and towns.

In your opinion, what contributes to people in North America eating more meat than any other countries? What does this say about North American values and ways of living?

The American economy and culture values ease and profit over what could be healthier and more humane. The livestock industry puts animals through terrible conditions. But overpopulated factory farms, drugs in livestock feed and other poor living conditions have created a larger and more readily available supply of meat for a culture that doesn't have the freedom to slow down and choose better options, despite how unhealthy it can be.
