"Big picture, pushing for policies that will make an impact and encouraging companies to reform their practices. Little picture, trying to stop buying, especially things in plastic, reduce food waste more and limit energy consumption."

DAILY ACTIONS
Participant Feed
Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.
To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?
Everyone should read every word of this new report on plastic trash from GAIA and Greenpeace. Just released today. I feel sick. Our whole culture of recycling has been a lie and we've been poisoning poorer countries for decades. https://wastetradestories.org/
I think it's a good sign that some of my many times reused plastic bags are finally starting to fully wear out. And I don't have any new ones to replace them with :)
Today and tomorrow are our last days for this fantastic eco-challenge! Time to step up our game. Especially since Rhinebeck is going all out to try to beat us and they're not that far behind. Hint, if you want to give your points a serious boost, make a donation to echochallenge.org - it's worth a lot. And keep on checking in and doing your daily actions and posting and such. This has been a great way to raise my own awareness about daily actions I can do to decrease my carbon footprint and make my life less ecologically disastrous.
Yesterday was garbage and recycling pick up at our house (waste management) and I was heartened to see how much less trash and recycling we had produced as a result of my simply not buying things packaged in plastic and buying in bulk. It's working and I want to do MORE.
Energy production can and should be local - this requires less investment of money and also encourages people to use the energy sources they have at hand. Less power is also lost traveling long distances.
I had heard of it before. I love the way this system integrates so many separate aspects of food production and forest management. The fact that these things can enrich each other without forcing us to clear land for grazing is a win-win.
I've stopped buying certain things packaged in plastic that I know are not recyclable and started separating my recycling (at this point just keeping the paper separate since my hauler is still doing single stream so it's hard to say how much difference it will make) and making sure that all the containers are really clean to limit contamination. And there's already less stuff in my recycling bins which feels good.
