I really enjoyed participating in this year's Eco-Challenge with members of my congregation! As a longtime, sustainability activist, I humbly admit that I initially doubted that I would learn anything new BUT I was very wrong! I learned about several new sustainability solutions, was challenged to stretch in some life areas, and am re-inspired to dedicate my time, talents, and treasure to contributing to a healthy, equitable, inclusive, and sustainable world for all! Thanks to Tom Fletcher for his leadership on this activity and a heart-felt thanks to the Eco-Challenge Team who make it all happen!

How does knowing the difference between use by, sell by, and best by dates empower you to make better decisions?

Knowing the difference between use by, sell by, and best by dates empowers me to make better decisions because I feel more confident deciding if or when it's okay to eat a food item or not.

I'm having a challenge finding a local program that offers a Master Composting/Recycling course. Anyone on Team Eruuf know of one?

Denise,  talk to Muriel Willman when she is here.  She taught an excellent class when she was with Orange County.  Now she is with Durham County, so not sure what her job is.

How difficult or easy was it to change your diet?

While I don't eat a lot of popular commercial brand processed or fast foods, eliminating irresponsibly produced palm oil from my diet will an ongoing challenge because it can be a difficult ingredient to identify sometimes. The Eco-Challenge has motivated me to pay more attention to my coffee and cocoa choices as well as personal care products.

How can micro energy solutions reduce inequities? Why is this important to you?

    Denise Frizzell's avatar
    Denise Frizzell 4/13/2019 3:54 PM
Micro energy solutions reduce inequities several ways to include providing the capacity to generate electricity without the necessity of the costly infrastructure required to connect to a centralized grid system. This is important to me because clean energy solutions that also fosters economic equity are double wins for the entire earth community, because generally speaking, environmental stewardship and economic equity are interrelated (e.g., the more economic equity the greater environmental stewardship).

How are environmental issues like black carbon and other emissions from cooking fires or rudimentary cookstoves also human health and social justice issues? Why do these issues matter to you?

    Denise Frizzell's avatar
    Denise Frizzell 4/09/2019 2:54 PM
Human health and social justice issues such as black carbon from cooking stoves matter to me, because I see human health and well-being and environmental health as interrelated issues. Both matter because I deeply care about the quality of life of the entire Earth Community in part because spiritually and ethically, I see both as sacred expressions of Divinity in which humans have a particular responsibility to respect and hopefully, ultimately love.

I'm really enjoying participating in this year's Eco-Challenge with members of my faith community. I'm excited to be learning about sustainability solutions that I had not heard of before. For example, silvopasture which is an approach to farming that integrates trees, vegetation, farm animals, and managed grazing in a more holistic manner.

What is the most exciting solution you explored? Why is it exciting to you?

    Denise Frizzell 4/06/2019 2:18 PM
Well, first, I am excited to learn more about how fast renewables are coming online and for the most part with costs dropping dramatically.
If I had to pick  the most exciting solutions, I'd have to say solar farms and energy storage. Solar farms are exciting to me because of the expected growth and the associated carbon dioxide savings. I'm excited about the advances in energy storage technology because it provides grid flexibility which seems to be an essential element of our clean energy transition.

I remember reading during the 2017 eclipse (we drove into the shadow), that certain areas of the country had to rev up their coal powered plants for about 1/2 to 3/4 of an hour, because we have come so far with solar generation that the loss caused by the eclipse would be noticable in the grid.  Isn't that an AMAZING step forward?  And that was nearly 2 years ago.

Action Track: Social Justice Support Indigenous Peoples' Land Management
Indigenous speaker and activist Winona LaDuke says that, "most indigenous ceremonies, if you look to their essence, are about the restoration of balance — they are a reaffirmation of our relationship to creation. That is our intent: to restore, and then to retain balance and honor our part in creation." Why is balance important to sustainability?

    Denise Frizzell's avatar
    Denise Frizzell 4/06/2019 2:07 PM
Balance is important to sustainability because a healthy and vibrant planet now and into the future necessitates living within natural boundaries or limits. Thus, sustainability requires balance or in the negative, without balance there is no sustainability.
