What does your vision of a sustainable community look like? What would need to be changed in order for such vision to become reality?

One feature of a sustainable community is the use of waste for energy generation such as methane biogas harvesting from farm and landfill waste. This is particularly appropriate for large university campuses that not only consume significant energy in the form of electricity and vehicle fuel, but also host research facilities programs and students who will help develop the state of the art of biogas harvesting and usage to ultimately upgrade the industry.

We in the USA are tied to the oldest power grid in the world. Designed over 100 years ago, it is the oldest working machine in developed world. Its inefficiencies are legion, making minimal use of kinetic energy and storage, yet we are more dependent on a constant uninterrupted electricity flow than most countries in the developing world, throwing away oodles of energy as wasted heat through poor conductors and emitting more than our share of greenhouse gas and waste heat. We also have a huge number of toxic chemicals in transformers waiting one day to be re-entered into the earth when they burn out or are replaced.
