I've been researching food waste reduction and what's available locally.  We've been taking our food waste (that we freeze during the week) to the bin at the Carrboro Farmers Market on Saturdays.  There is also a company that recycles food waste and you can have them pick up weekly at your house and leave you with a clean bin for the next week.  In the U.S., we waste 40% of our food and 90% of that creates methane in our landfills.  Worth a little extra time to scrape your plate into a bin instead of the trash can or disposal!

Concrete is a good example of a material that most of us encounter every day, but may its carbon footprint is not obvious. What other everyday materials might have a large carbon footprint? How can you find out more?

Asphalt is produced through the refining of petroleum. It is a viscous adhesive that, along with aggregate, forms HMA pavement surfaces. Think about the millions of miles of roads in the U.S. alone and you can imagine the impact of this material.

Turning methane into fuel.  We produce so much of it because 90% of our food waste (40% of all food produced in the US) goes to the landfill and creates methane, so the thought of being able to use it for fuel versus extracting petroleum or coal from the ground seems like a good move.
