In your opinion, what contributes to people in North America eating more meat than any other countries? What does this say about North American values and ways of living?

It's the culture and a sign of wealth.
It's also a misconception that we need to eat meat at every meal.
It's also damaging to the environment.
As North Americans, we must educate ourselves to not eat as much meat on a daily basis.

What are other easy and low-cost ways to reduce your water usage at home?

    • Do not keep the faucet running while brushing your teeth.
    • Recycle rainwater for watering outdoor planters
    • Don't run the shower if you're not in it.
    • Run the dishwasher when it's full.

How could you incorporate other "R's" -- reduce, reuse, refuse, repair, repurpose, etc. -- into your lifestyle? How does considering implementing these "R's" make you feel?

I recycle all cardboard and plastic for the maker space in my school library. When computer keyboards or printers can't be repaired, I repurpose them for the maker space area, so students can tinker and learn how to take them apart and recreate something. I take metal utensils to work instead of using plastic knives, forks and spoons. And I use glass bottles to refill my water from the filtered fountain. Implementing these small changes make me feel like I'm helping to affect change in our world.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Food Smaller Portions
Fun fact: Your brain and stomach register feelings of fullness after about 20 minutes of eating. While dishing food out, we tend to load our plates with more than we need. Using smaller plates helps to mitigate this. Aside from the environmental benefits, what other benefits might come out of eating smaller portions?

I love using a smaller plate, as it helps me eat smaller portions. Smaller portions mean greater environmental benefits and a chance to lose weight. That's a win-win!

What would a sustainable water future in your region look like? What needs to change?

Our shower faucet was dripping a lot. I asked my husband to fix it. He needed to replace some plumbing components and we needed to get a low fixture shower head. And then, the bathtub faucet was leaking rather significantly. Again, hubby to the rescue. Shut the water off in the house and fixed the plumbing issues. Go team!
I think in order to achieve a sustainable water future in our region, people have to be wiling to change and to be able to afford these changes. Examples might include: low-flow fixtures, dual-flush toilets and rainwater harvesting.

Lights off everyone? Earth Hour happening March 30th! Don't be surprised if you find your neighbors turning off their lights for a full hour Saturday night. They're taking part in a global movement called Earth HourHow did it start? Earth Hour is an annual tradition in which people switch off their lights to spread awareness about sustainability and climate change. Started by the World Wildlife Fund, it takes place this year on March 30, from 8:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. local time. (And it's not to be confused with Earth Day, which is April 22.)

Change the world one step or action at a time. Using smaller plates when eating has helped reduce my food intake. Less food, less calories. Eating more salads and vegetables daily. Thinking about joining a CSA (community supported agriculture) in my community for organically grown fruits and veggies. It's a win-win for me!
