Support Local Food Systems
#4 Plant-Rich Diet
I will source 10 percent of my food from local producers each day. This could include signing up for a local CSA, buying from a farmer's market, visiting a food co-op, foraging with a local group, or growing my own ingredients.

Learn More about Silvopasture
#9 Silvopasture
I will spend at least 30 minutes watching videos and/or reading about the environmental benefits of silvopasture.

Learn More about Regenerative Agriculture
#11 Regenerative Agriculture
I will spend at least 30 minutes learning about the need for more regenerative agriculture.
Food
Keep Track of Wasted Food
#3 Reduced Food Waste
I will keep a daily log of food I throw away during the EcoChallenge, either because it went bad before I ate it, I put too much on my plate, or it was scraps from food preparation.
Participant Feed
Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.

Vicki Haviland 4/21/2019 9:08 AMThe challenges were very informative and after further research I have a different look regarding local farmers. I had not heard of silvopasture and found it quite interesting and would be supportive of those establishments participating in such a concept. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFoodDependable fresh food, supporting local farmers and building resilient communities are just a few benefits of local food systems. Which of these (or other) advantages inspire you the most?
Vicki Haviland 4/21/2019 9:06 AMI am supporting local farmers such as the 'Romeo' apple orchard who not only supplies apples, but offers other local products and produce. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFoodHad you heard of the term "silvopasture" before now? After learning more about it, what do you think is the biggest advantage of silvopasture?
Vicki Haviland 4/21/2019 9:04 AMNo I had not heard of silvopasture before now. After reading and additional research, I think the biggest advantage is not only for the animals to have shelter and the forestry providing enhanced soil, the owners of the land have an additional source of potential income for from the forestry aspect. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFoodClean air, clean water and healthy food are three reasons to care about regenerative agriculture. What are some other reasons?
Vicki Haviland 4/12/2019 10:34 AMImproving the land by diverse crops and plant life. Increasing microbial population is important to maintain and restore soil. A healthy soil is the base for healthy plants/animals which in turn helps our food chain.
Reverse climate change - some believe that the by increasing soil carbons it is possible to reverse the damage done. Helping to decreasing GHG emissions and increasing the pull of CO2 offers a 'hopeful' solution to address the environment.
Farming methods are reimagined by the lack of chemicals further improving the land and soil.
