Devin Horwich 4/24/2019 5:13 PMI love walking, the best part about it is observing your surroundings. I grew up in the city and i've always hated subways and busses. At the time I wasn't really aware of how environmentally friendly/unfriendly these actions were, but I was very aware that being underground and sitting in a vehicle waiting for it to take me somewhere was just depressing. It's so much nicer to just take a walk and enjoy the outdoors. There are a lot of buildings in the city that inspire environmentally friendly habits such as solar panel roofs, minimal glass, cutting down unnecessary light pollution, etc. However, the vast majority of Manhattan still has a very long way to go. NYC is one of (if not the worst) polluters in the nation. Seldom do we get a clear sky, light pollution is often abysmal... That being said, I am proud of my city in regards to the fact that I am seeing so many more tress on the streets than I've ever seen before. Central Park used to be the only actual area with trees, i'm starting to see them everywhere now. I'm glad to know that the city is putting in an honest effort. The next step we need to take is eradicating times square off the face of the Earth. Not only would it help the planet, it would improve the mental state of thousands of locals that actually have to live there/commute and walk through that heaping pile of garbage, lights, tourists, pollution, and anything else you can think of that will give you a migraine. -
Devin Horwich 4/21/2019 11:56 PMFor everyone trying to start a successful business: Keep the planet in mind! We are dangerously close to self destruction, so if you want to make a lot of money and do something that would help the planet at the same time, start selling a product that encourages positive behavior towards our planet. -
Devin Horwich 4/21/2019 11:52 PMThe weather has been ridiculously nice lately. We need to appreciate life, our planet, and our surroundings while we still have it - take a walk! -
Devin Horwich 4/21/2019 11:51 PMSomething I'd never realized until actively completing this challenge is that vegetables actually provide clarity. Our bodies are directly linked to our minds, if we're putting unhealthy food in our bodies it destroys the equilibrium and clouds our thoughts. Eating vegetable is a really good idea if you're trying to stay sharp, motivated, and happy. -
Devin Horwich 4/21/2019 11:49 PMPushing yourself to eat everything on your plate is not only important for the environment, it is important for your own well being and staying in shape. All that food will be converted to muscle if you stay active. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONTransport Stay on the GroundWhat was your process like for restructuring your trip? How can you avoid more air travel in the future?
Devin Horwich 4/19/2019 5:27 PMVery tough trying to convince my friends not to take the plane to LA. If you market the trip as an adventure across the US however, you might get your friends on board. Airplanes are expensive and horrible for the environment, why not save the green in your pocket as well as the green that keeps us alive? -
Devin Horwich 4/18/2019 7:57 PMI've been eating at least one salad per day and i've never felt healthier. As human beings we are wired to have a fruit and vegetable based diet, the least we can do is try our best to implement one vegetable based meal a day, it's good for you and it's good for the planet. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONWomen and Girls Support Women-Owned BusinessesGlobally, women typically invest a higher proportion of their earnings in their families and communities than men. How can you better support communities by supporting women? Can you share any past experiences that may help others take action?
Devin Horwich 4/18/2019 7:53 PMThe internet allows us to access everyone's art around the world. I own a clothing brand, so i'm always interested to see what other designers around the world are coming up with; a lot of the coolest brands these days are owned by women designers. One came up with one of the most interesting business ideas as far as marketing clothing that i've seen in recent history. I've shown all my friends and they all love it too. It's extremely important to support up and coming artists with promotion however you can. The beautiful thing about the internet, if you make a career out of it, is that there is no wage gap. The possibilities are endless no matter what gender you are/identify with. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONTransport Use Muscle PowerHow do your transportation choices affect your engagement in your community? Does your experience or enjoyment differ while walking, riding transit, biking or driving?
Devin Horwich 4/18/2019 7:44 PMI don't drive on purpose. Walking is extremely therapeutic, especially during this weather. So I think it's important to stay active and put in the time of your day to walk, not to mention how environmentally unfriendly driving is. Try and talk your friends into walking around with you too, it's a lot more special than sitting in a car. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood CompostingProducing food that goes uneaten squanders many resources—seeds, water, energy, land, fertilizer, hours of labor, financial capital. Which of these kinds of waste most motivates you to change your behavior regarding food waste? Why?
Devin Horwich 4/18/2019 7:42 PMOut of the options on this list, hours of labor on behalf of hard working people gets me the most motivated. That being said, I always finish everything on my plate just thinking about where the perfectly edible food could go instead of a trash can; that same food could have been given to thousands of starving people on the street. If you can't finish your food and it's still edible, I think it's always important to seek out someone in need and at least offer it.
