Transport
Stay on the Ground
#43 Airplanes, #63 Telepresence
Instead of traveling by plane, I will find an alternative way to accomplish the goals of an upcoming trip (i.e. telepresence, vacation locally).
Materials
Go Paperless
#70 Recycled Paper
I will reduce the amount of paper mail that I receive by 0.11lbs (0.05kg) a day or 41lbs (18.6kg) a year by opting into paperless billing, ending unwanted subscriptions and opting out of junk mail.
Transport
Explore Other Transport Solutions
All Transport Solutions
I will spend at least 15 minutes researching other Drawdown Transport Solutions.
Materials
Install a Low-Flow Showerhead
#46 Water Saving - Home
I will save up to 15 gallons (56 L) of water a day by installing a low-flow showerhead.
Materials
Fix Leaky Faucets
#46 Water Saving - Home
I will fix faucets or report leaky faucets to facilities that have been wasting up to 9 gallons (34 L) of water per faucet every day.

Support Local Food Systems
#4 Plant-Rich Diet
I will source 50 percent of my food from local producers each day. This could include signing up for a local CSA, buying from a farmer's market, visiting a food co-op, foraging with a local group, or growing my own ingredients.
Transport
Advocate For Greener Vehicles
#26 Electric Vehicles
I will assess the vehicles used by my company or college and advocate for a purchasing policy focused on electric and fuel-efficient vehicles
Transport
Test Drive an Electric Bike
#69 Electric Bikes
I will test drive an electric bike at a local distributor to see if it makes sense to use one in place of my car, or to extend the area I can cover by bike.

REFLECTION QUESTIONMaterialsWhat do you want to prioritize over material 'stuff' in your own life?
Iris Hrabe-Ritzert 4/24/2019 2:13 PMEnjoying nature, as is. Going paperless or at least reducing a big amount of paper is doable. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONMaterialsWhat would a sustainable water future in your region look like? What needs to change?
Iris Hrabe-Ritzert 4/24/2019 2:12 PMIn southern California a lot needs to change. Besides conserving water, saving water while it rains for example, water treatment plants can make a huge impact. -

REFLECTION QUESTIONTransportWhat was your process like for restructuring your trip? How can you avoid more air travel in the future?
Iris Hrabe-Ritzert 4/12/2019 10:32 AMFor this spring we decided to go camping close to where we live instead of flying to Mexico, like we did in the past. This was in the back of our head already, in order to introduce our little one to one more piece of the outdoor lifestyle we love so much - camping! The Drawdown Ecochallenge made us go for it in the end! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONTransportHalf of all trips made in the US are three miles or less; 72% of them are driven. Private vehicles account for 60% of trips of a mile or less. Do you often drive short distances instead of biking or walking? If so, how might incorporating an electric bike into your lifestyle help you make more climate-friendly choices?
Iris Hrabe-Ritzert 4/12/2019 10:30 AMI tried an electric bike for a week when we got stuck at a friends house with my little one due to a family emergency. I like the ability to make further distances and uphill rides, but think the technolgies needs to develop a bit further for me to be really eco-friendly. The fact that the bikes can't charges themselves when parked by solar energy or by biking already is a throw off. For now I stick to biking everywhere in the neigborhood (bike trailer for child) and also save a trip to the gym this way :) -
REFLECTION QUESTIONMaterialsWhat are other easy and low-cost ways to reduce your water usage at home?
Iris Hrabe-Ritzert 4/12/2019 10:26 AMSince we live in a rental home, our options are limited (pre installed dish washer, laundry, etc). So we make sure to have enough dishes so we can always wait until the dishwasher is really full to make it worth it to run. We talked our landlord into being more water conscious by turning off the watering in the yard when it rains (even though it's a pain in the ass to do that manually), we also collect rain water for our (very few) minimal water plants and always fix leaky faucets right away. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONTransportWhat did you find out? What is the most interesting fact you learned?
Iris Hrabe-Ritzert 4/08/2019 9:05 AMLearned a lot. I personally prefer a "real" bike over an electric bike. Great workout, no need to go the gym and saves even more electricity. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFoodDependable fresh food, supporting local farmers and building resilient communities are just a few benefits of local food systems. Which of these (or other) advantages inspire you the most?
Iris Hrabe-Ritzert 4/08/2019 9:03 AMI realized that it's not neccessarily more expensive to buy groceries at the farmers market. It's important to stick to seasonal veggies and fruits! We also have a local butcher where we buy meat, which we don't eat a lot. -
Iris Hrabe-Ritzert 4/08/2019 9:01 AMEverybody gets so much credit card advertising in the mail, I've started to collect and then called each one to stop mailing me. Everything else is already paperless. Did you you know that a lot of shops also offer paperless receipts (CVS, etc) if you sign up with them.
