REFLECTION QUESTIONLand Use Research PeatlandsMuch of Indonesia's peatlands have been drained so they could be replaced with palm oil or pulp and paper plantations. How can you make choices that help to protect peatlands, even if you live far away from one?
Malina Japp 4/24/2019 11:33 AMI think the best option would be to cut back on the use of products that are produced on old peatland locations as well as donate to conservation efforts. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONMaterials Properly Dispose of RefrigerantsHow do you address your own feelings of concern, fear or despair about climate change?
Malina Japp 4/23/2019 12:10 PMClimate change is a scary thing to think about, but knowing that society is working to reverse the effects of climate change and prevent them from returning alleviates some of that fear. Everyone has a natural instinct to survive, so people will do anything to ensure survival. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONElectricity Generation Learn More about Micro WindMicro turbines can be placed on large structures to take advantage of stronger, steadier breezes. The Eiffel Tower now sports vertical axis turbines that produce electricity for use on site. Where could micro turbines potentially be installed in your city?

REFLECTION QUESTIONLand Use Learn about Temperate ForestsAs you learn more about the scope and seriousness of the environmental challenges we face, what impact does that have on your thinking and actions? What are the parts that feel overwhelming? What parts help you feel hopeful?
Malina Japp 4/12/2019 11:44 AM?:As you learn more about the scope and seriousness of the environmental challenges we face, what impact does that have on your thinking and actions? It is really hard to remember how much of an impact we as individuals make on the environment. I really do try my hardest to recycle and compost and carpool when I can, but so many of the things we do that hurt the environment are really just second nature, especially in American society.?: What are the parts that feel overwhelming? Knowing that if we don’t do something to reverse the effects of climate change, the planet will be uninhabitable for humans by 2050. This is very overwhelming because it seems that nobody is really doing anything about it. The people in power are so corrupted by the oil industry that they don’t even seem to care about surviving, they only care about money.?: What parts help you feel hopeful? I feel hopeful knowing that there are relatively easy solutions to reversing climate change, and people seem to be incorporating these practices more and more into their daily way of life. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFood Learn More about SilvopastureHad you heard of the term "silvopasture" before now? After learning more about it, what do you think is the biggest advantage of silvopasture?
Malina Japp 4/09/2019 11:32 AMI had not. I think the biggest advantage to silvopasture farming is the effects it has on climate change. While implementing the silvopasture system may take some time, it is certainly not impossible and will cut CO2 emissions significantly. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONElectricity Generation Learn More About Geothermal EnergyGeothermal energy is reliable, abundant, and efficient. Project Drawdown states that public investment will play a crucial role in its expansion. In what ways (i.e. with money, time, advocacy) can you invest in geothermal energy?
Malina Japp 4/05/2019 11:36 AMNorth Carolina can reinstate tax refunds to endow geothermal energy. The federal government could offer seed monies for active geothermal power plants.
